Microsoft: Xbox One will work with external video capture devices

If you buy an Xbox One and don't want to depend or use the game console's built in game recording and editing features, Microsoft has confirmed that the hardware will also support a way to attach and use an external video capture device.

Polygon reports that, according to a statement from Microsoft Game Studios Vice President Phil Spencer, external video capture products will work on the Xbox One "exactly like it works today" on the current Xbox 360 console." There will apparently be at least one limitation, however: The devices won't be able to capture video on the console that uses the High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection system. However, if you just want to capture a cool gameplay moment on the capture device, Spencer says, "you're fine."

A few weeks ago at Comic-Con, Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox One will automatically record and store the last five minutes of gameplay from a play session, which can then be quickly uploaded to a number of social media accounts. The Upload Studio feature will include some editing features for those clips, including placing custom skins in the video and even the ability to record voice overs for those clips.

Five fall focuses for Florida football

Tyler Murphy should have a chance to work with the first-team offense with starting quarterback Jeff Driskel sidelined for the first two weeks of fall camp.

Matt Stamey/Staff photographer

Published: Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 4:00 p.m.
Last Modified: Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 2:32 p.m.

While the rest of campus continues to slumber through the final weeks of summer, it's back to the practice field for the Florida football team, which opens preseason camp Friday.

As is usual with any preseason camp, questions and themes abound for UF with the start of the season now just a month away.

Here are five things the Gators need to get done on the practice field between now and the Aug. 31 opener against Toledo:

1. Groom the No. 2 QB

Before Jeff Driskel ended up on the operating table earlier this week for appendectomy surgery, the No. 1 camp goal at QB probably was to get the No. 2 quarterback (probably junior Tyler Murphy) ready to play just in case he's needed at some point in the season. Now, the goal may be to get the No. 2 guy not just ready to play, but ready to start. Driskel's unexpected surgery could sideline him for the first two weeks of camp, and further illustrates just how fragile (and scary) the situation is at quarterback. Murphy has not thrown a pass in a college game. The other two scholarship players on the roster are a redshirt freshman (Skyler Mornhinweg) and a true freshman (Max Staver). This is going to be a crucial camp at the quarterback position, especially in the first two weeks, when the coaches must get Murphy (or someone else) not just ready to step in, but lead the offense.

2. Settle the situation at linebacker

With starting middle linebacker Antonio Morrison suspended for the first two games of the season, the Gators are going to have to do a little scrambling (and maybe experimenting) at the linebacker positions. The most logical scenario is for Mike Taylor to move from weakside linebacker to the middle, but that could leave a true freshman (Daniel McMillian) to start at the weakside. Another possibility is moving Taylor to the middle, switching Darrin Kitchens from the strongside to the weakside and making Neiron Ball or Ronald Powell the starter on the strongside. The coaches have planned all along to play Powell at the Buck position and outside linebacker. This may be the opportunity to establish Powell as a starter at outside linebacker, which would give the Gators a chance to have Powell and Dante Fowler Jr. on the field at the same time. The bottom line is the coaches are going to have to determine the best combination in camp and go with it.

3. Find a second safety

One of the biggest question marks on defense is at the safety positions, where the Gators must replace last year's starters, Matt Elam and Josh Evans. Cody Riggs, a former starter at cornerback, appears a lock to nail down one of the starting roles. The other appears to be very much up in the air heading into camp. The competition for the other starting job should be fierce between Jabari Gorman, Valdez Showers, Marcus Maye (and maybe even highly rated true freshman Marcell Harris). The leading candidate may be Maye, a redshirt freshman who was a scout-team standout last fall who has received an endorsement from Elam. Maye appears to have some of the same playmaking potential that made Elam a valuable player on defense last season.

4. Define Purifoy's role on ?O?

The coaches clearly want starting cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy to have an impact on offense. That's why Purifoy spent the first half of spring practice working exclusively at wide receiver. Now that they have a pretty good idea what he's capable of doing on offense, Will Muschamp and offensive coordinator Brent Pease need to determine how (and how much) they're going to use Purifoy on offense. He's an explosive athlete who could make plays down the field, but that's not going to change the fact he will remain a starting cornerback, something Muschamp has been adamant about. How much time Purifoy spends on offense may be determined by the growth of UF's young wide receivers. If a few of the young guys show they can consistently make plays, Purifoy's role on offense might be limited. If the Gators come out of camp still searching for playmakers at receiver, Purifoy could play a major role on offense.

5. Name the replacement for Sturgis

It's going to be close to impossible to adequately replace Caleb Sturgis, one of the all-time great place-kickers at UF, but someone is going to have to try and fill the role. It's either going to be senior walk-on Brad Phillips or redshirt freshman Austin Hardin. Phillips has limited experience (he made two-of-three field goal attempts in 2011, including a 43-yarder against Georgia), while Hardin has none. The two were basically dead-even at the end of spring practice and will continue their competition in camp. Muschamp has expressed confidence in both kickers. Phillips may have an edge in consistency, but Hardin has a stronger leg and probably a bigger upside. ESPN rated Hardin the No. 1 kicker in the nation coming out of high school in 2011.

Facebook shares soar 40% in a week on mobile ad revenue increase

Wall Street likes Facebook again. Shares in the social network today returned to their flotation price for the first time since its disastrous initial public offering (IPO) last year.

Facebook's shares touched above the milestone $38-a-share float price on New York's Nasdaq exchange on Wednesday morning, before slipping down to $36.70.

The shares have soared by more than 40% since last Wednesday, when Facebook reported a massive surge in mobile advertising revenue.

The rapid share price increase values the company, founded by a 20-year-old Mark Zuckerberg in his Harvard dorm room less than a decade ago, at just under $92bn (?60bn) ? about eight times the value of Marks & Spencer (founded 1884).

Zuckerberg's paper fortune has risen by just under $5bn in a week to nearly $17bn, according to the Bloomberg billionaires index.

The 29-year-old ? known for his trademark blue hoodies and desire to maintain a relatively simple life despite his vast wealth ? has jumped from the 75th to 42nd richest person in the world, leapfrogging Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer and Dell founder Michael Dell along the way. Microsoft founder Bill Gates, 57, remains the richest person in the world with a net worth of $72bn. Mexico's Carlos Slim, 73, is $5.5bn behind Gates.

Facebook's shares have not been able to hold above the $38 float price since its 18?May 2012 debut, when Facebook's underwriters were forced to buy stock to stop the stock falling below the issue price. By the end of that month the shares had crashed by more than $10, wiping more than $4bn off the value of Zuckerberg's fortune in less than two weeks. By August, the shares had dropped a further $10 wiping out almost $50bn of the company's market value.

The recovery only really began in earnest last week when Facebook reported a much better-than-expected 53% increase in revenue to $1.8bn in the three months to the end of June.

Wall Street was particularly impressed with the company recording a 51% increase in mobile users to 819m. Previously, analysts had openly mocked Zuckerberg's promise to make the company "mobile first".

"We are investing in mobile, measurement, and product innovation," Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, said on a conference call with analysts. "The results we're reporting today demonstrate the early returns on these investments."

David Kirkpatrick, author of The Facebook Effect, a history of the company, said: "Very few people saw the pace at which the entire activity of the planet's internet connectivity was going to move toward mobile. It's clearly under way now."

"They've really done a 180-degree shift toward mobile, even if it was somewhat belatedly," he told Bloomberg.

Pending home sales pull back in June as rates rise

By Paige Gance

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Contracts to purchase previously owned U.S. homes fell in June, retreating from a more than six-year high and suggesting rising mortgage rates were starting to dampen home sales.

The National Association of Realtors said on Monday its Pending Homes Sales Index, based on contracts signed last month, decreased 0.4 percent to 110.9. May's index was revised down to 111.3, the highest since December 2006, from a previously reported 112.3.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected signed contracts, which become sales after a month or two, to fall 1.0 percent.

Compared to last year, contracts were up 10.9 percent.

Stocks and bonds mostly ignored the report, but the dollar trimmed earlier losses against the yen.

The housing market has been a bright spot in the economy, providing a buffer from fiscal austerity in Washington. Existing home sales fell in June, but selling prices hit a five-year high in a sign the housing recovery was still on track. In addition, new home sales rose last month.

However, an index from the Mortgage Bankers Association that measures loan applications for home purchases has declined 10 percent since early May, a sign of the toll higher borrowing costs are starting to take.

"Mortgage interest rates began to rise in May, taking some of the momentum out of contract activity in June," said NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun. "The persistent lack of inventory also is contributing to lower contract signings."

Rates on 30-year fixed rate mortgages have climbed about a full percentage point since early May on expectations the U.S. Federal Reserve may begin scaling back its bond-buying stimulus program as early as September.

"We had such an outsize gain in May and I think what we saw was a good number of people that were trying to beat the punch and pull the trigger on buying that home before mortgage rates rose even further," said Sam Bullard, senior economist at Wells Fargo in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Contracts were up in the West, where they reached the highest level since November 2009, but down in the Midwest and South. The index for the Northeast was unchanged.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces the gift of the Abe and Charlotte Levitow Collection featuring animation art and related production materials documenting the career of animator Abe Levitow. Donated in their parents? honor by the Levitows? three children, Roberta, Judy and Jon, the collection features animation cels, backgrounds, storyboards, graphic art materials and related film prints ? hundreds of items that represent Levitow?s accomplishments as an artist, animator and director for Warner Bros., UPA and MGM, and include his work on features such as Gay Purr-ee (1962) and The Phantom Tollbooth (1970).

The collection will be housed in both the Academy?s Margaret Herrick Library and the Academy Film Archive.

?We are honored that the Levitow family has entrusted the preservation of their father?s legacy to the Academy?s archivists,? said Margaret Herrick Library Director Linda Mehr, ?and you really can?t go wrong when Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are in the mix, can you??

Levitow began his career at Leon Schlesinger Productions, where he served as a publicity artist and animator on cartoons released through Warner Bros. He worked primarily as a member of the Chuck Jones unit, contributing to many of Jones?s films in the late 1940s and early 1950s, including the Oscar-winning animated short For Scent-imental Reasons (1949). He was elevated to director on several Warner Bros. cartoons before moving on to UPA in the late 1950s, where he served as animation director on the studio?s first feature, 1001 Arabian Nights.

At UPA, Levitow helmed the animated feature Gay Purr-ee, featuring the voices of Judy Garland and Robert Goulet, and Mister Magoo?s Christmas Carol,? the animated musical version of the Charles Dickens tale. Levitow then joined the animation unit at MGM, where he directed a number of the later Tom and Jerry cartoons, including The A-Tom-inable Snowman (1966), Guided Mouse-ille (1967) and Rock ?n? Rodent (1967).

In addition to the more than 500 pieces of original production art, which will join more than 15,000 such items already held by the Margaret Herrick Library, the Levitow Collection includes scripts, sound recordings and other documentation related to Levitow?s work in film, television and commercials. All of the production materials may be accessed by filmmakers, historians, journalists, students and the public at the library, located in the Academy?s Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills. Many of the pieces in the Levitow Collection are available for viewing online through the Library?s Production Art Database at www.collections.oscars.org/prodart. PROtique? is more than happy to work with business owners regardless of their unique circumstances in order to provide necessary coverage to limit personal liability.

Home based business insurance allows for owners to effectively protect the brand and assets of businesses which they?ve worked hard to build over the years. It also provides a way of managing risk more effectively, where the entrepreneur can focus their attention on more productive areas like running the day-to-day operations instead of worrying about possible pitfalls causing financial ruin. A specific policy, for example, can insure assets against theft or damage due to weather. Having a safety net in place will not only allow for an owner to sleep better at night but will prevent them from incurring a financial loss that may otherwise be too much to withstand.

PROtique? has the knowledge required to create the perfect individual policy geared towards home-based beauty care businesses. The reason they?re so proficient at writing such policies is because that is all they do. PROtique? is a specialized insurance firm ? the only one like it in Canada ? that offers policies exclusively to beauty care professionals. When using images, always place captions near them. Search engines always look at the text surrounding a picture to see if the image is relevant to what the person is searching for. Using captions can help your pages rise in the SERPs.

TIP! A short-term sales promotion can quickly improve your website?s PageRank. The better your offer, the more outside sites will promote your business.

Offer special sales on your site?s check-out page. You could add about anything enticing here, from a buy-one, get-one deal to a certain percentage of savings on a bundle of items. It can help you clear out inventory and bring more sales your way.

Scholastic earnings fall as 'Hunger Games' fades

NEW YORK (AP) -- Readers are not as hungry for "The Hunger Games" books as they were a year ago, which hurt Scholastic Corp.'s fiscal fourth-quarter results, sending its stock down more than 6 percent.

Scholastic said Thursday that earned $21.5 million, or 66 cents per share, in the three months that ended on May 31. That's down from $57 million, or $1.76 per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Revenue fell 25 percent $506.9 million from $676.6 million.

FactSet only has one analyst estimate for the company. That analyst was expecting earnings of 82 cents per share on revenue of $514.3 million.

The company blamed lower revenue per order from its book clubs as well as falling sales of the hit "Hunger Games" trilogy.

As readers buy more electronic books on tablets and e-readers, Scholastic has been investing in e-books and other digital ventures, but this has weighed on profits. The company said it plans to improve its profitability in the current fiscal year, "while continuing to invest in key areas of long-term growth, including children's book distribution and educational content and services."

For fiscal 2014, Scholastic expects earnings from continuing operations in the range of $1.40 to $1.80 per share on revenue of about $1.8 billion.

Shares of the company fell $2.09, or 6.5 percent, to $30.01 in morning trading. The stock has traded between $25.03 and $34.55 in the past 52 weeks.

Cummins Receives Solar Energy Funding

A powerful project will be starting soon at Cummins Inc. Jamestown Engine Plant.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced that $54 million has been awarded under his NY-Sun initiative for 79 large-scale solar energy projects across the state. Nine sites were awarded in Western New York, including Cummins.

The projects are meant to produce power for on-site use, not for direct sale to utilities. Under certain circumstances, however, unused power can be added to the grid in exchange for future credit.

"Gov. Cuomo's NY-Sun initiative has led to unprecedented demand for solar power among large electric consumers. Less than two years old, this is a great success story for New York," said Francis Murray Jr., president and CEO of New York State Energy Research and Development Agency. "The investments we are making in solar power will help businesses around the state control and reduce their utility expenses, while increasing the amount of electricity the state gets from renewable energy and reducing demand on the electric grid."

Buffalo-based Solar Liberty has been awarded 6.5 megawatts of solar power projects by NYSERDA. In March, Solar Liberty was named as the solar installer for four large-scale installations, including Cummins.

"With support from Gov. Cuomo and funding from NYSERDA, large-scale photovoltaic projects have now become a reality," said Adam Rizzo, Solar Liberty president, who is originally from Jamestown. "As we celebrate our 10 year anniversary this year, we are excited about the future of renewable energy in the Western New York area and across New York state."

The partnership between Solar Liberty and Cummins came about with help from the County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency.

"Solar Liberty has been regularly at our Chautauqua County Energy Conference and Expo," said Bill Daly, CCIDA administrative director. "They've done some major installations all over."

When Daly learned that Solar Liberty was looking to work on a large commercial project, which would not cost any money to the company that was awarded it, he immediately thought of Cummins. After speaking with representatives from Cummins about the project, Daly got the two companies together.

"This is what we do that people don't often see," Daly said. "We do a lot of connections, getting local businesses to work with each other. This is a big deal for us to have been the total intermediary connecting the photovoltaic company with their NYSERDA application, to go to our largest private employer that had a facility that could handle a huge photovoltaic installation."

Randal Myers, director of manufacturing, engineering and facilities at Cummins, said the company is pleased to partner with Solar Liberty to install a 2MW solar system on Cummins' 1 million square foot roof.

"Environmental sustainability is a core value for Cummins," Myers said. "This sustainability commitment has been demonstrated in meeting the stringent emission requirements for the heavy duty 11, 12 and 15 liter diesel engines produced at JEP, as well as reducing energy usage within the operation. Generating a significant amount of renewable energy at the facility is an exciting opportunity."

County Executive Greg Edwards credited the CCIDA for building relationships with businesses and start-up companies, which helped put this deal into place.

"Solar Liberty is with the Rizzo family from Jamestown - Nathan, Adam and Paige," Edwards said. "Then they hired another local guy by the name of Ryan Calalesina, and he graduated from Southwestern. ... What Bill Daly was able to do was, he was able to connect local people at Solar Liberty with Cummins Engine, one of our best local employers, and together completed the application for this significant grant."

Edwards said the award demonstrates that local people continue to increase their success. Additionally, he said Cummins is able to reduce its cost of energy, and make the company even more competitive through this deal.

"It demonstrates that businesses in Chautauqua County can be on the cutting edge of all sorts of opportunities, including environmentally friendly energy production," Edwards said. "I strongly believe this is one of the examples of a successful program that people across New York state will see. I believe it will once again be the way to help other businesses follow along and take advantage of these changing opportunities in energy production. The bottom line is, two local businesses get a chance to grow, and everyone benefits from that in Chautauqua County."

NBA: Washington Wizards Targeting DeJuan Blair

IFWT DeJuan Blair

The?Washington?Wizards?recently said they were in the market for a ?stretch four? and their interest is in?San Antonio?Spurs?forward DeJuan Blair. ?Read more after the jump.

The?Wizards?are hopeful that they?ll be able to work out a sign-and-trade deal with the?San Antonio?Spurs?for Blair, but the?Spurs?may not have much interest in doing so. A free agent, the big man saw a dramatic loss in playing time for the?Spurs?this past season as both Tiago Splitter and?Boris Diaw?replaced him in the rotation. However, now with Diaw a pending free agent at season end, the?Spursmight not be inclined to let Blair walk in free agency, especially if his price is cheap.

There were one million new millionaires in the world last year, according to a survey, the World Wealth Report.

The population of millionaires worldwide surged by 9 percent last year, growing to 12 million, according to a report.

The World Wealth Report, from Capgemini and RBC Wealth Management, said rising stock markets and stronger real estate helped create 1 million new millionaires worldwide. Their wealth surged 10 percent to $46 trillion?more than the combined gross domestic product of the European Union, the U.S., China and Japan. (The report defined millionaires as individuals with $1 million or more in investable assets.)

"Overall, we saw strong equities, stronger real estate markets, and a bottoming out of the economies in the developed markets," said William Sullivan, global head of financial services for Capgemini. "All of those factors were able to drive growth."

The report also highlighted the strength of U.S. wealth creation relative to the rest of the world, especially emerging markets. North America reclaimed its position in 2012 as the region with the most millionaires -- 3.73 million -- a year after Asia-Pacific took over the top spot for the first time.

Capgemini said it expects the switch is temporary and Asia-Pacific, which had 3.68 million millionaires in 2012, will regain its top spot in the next year or two. Still, Sullivan said, weakness in Asia?especially China?has led many companies to lower their previous forecasts for wealth creation for the region.

"I think it's been tempered a little," he said. "It may not be the astronomical growth predicted." Still, he said the domestic markets in Asia are so strong that the region will see strong millionaire growth in the coming years.

The world's millionaires remain fairly cautious when it comes to investing. U.S. millionaires have one fifth of their investments in cash, while Japanese millionaires have half of their portfolio in cash, Sullivan said.

In North America, about a third of millionaires are focused on wealth preservation, while 28 percent were focused on growing their wealth.

SPY VIDEO: Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG on the 'Ring - Paul Tan

Another video of the Mercedes-Benz GLA Class doing the rounds on the ?Ring ? we first saw the GLA 45 AMG in spyshots back in April, and now the Automedia folk have caught the car on the move on the Nordschleife, adding to the earlier GLA Class video that came about last month.

Expected to debut in Frankfurt in September, the GLA 45 AMG will sit at the top of the Tristar?s new entry-level SUV class. Underpinned by a MLA platform, the vehicle will be equipped the same M132 2.0 litre twin-scroll turbo four-cylinder as found on the A 45 AMG hatch and CLA 45 AMG four-door coupe, with 360 hp and 450 Nm for output figures.

Compared to the base GLA versions, the GLA 45 AMG should be dressed up in similar AMG fashion as its above-mentioned cousins ? on the cards should be bigger wheels, larger air intakes and twin exhaust pipes, among other things.
