Scientist at Work Blog: Efforts to Save Endangered Hawaiian Birds

David J. Flaspohler, an avian ecologist and conservation biologist at Michigan Technological University, writes from Hawaii, where he is studying the influence of human activities on birds and the natural ecosystems that support them.

Tuesday, May 22

One of the great pleasures of learning bird songs comes in the drowsy predawn twilight. Through the window comes the voice of the first bold male offering up his species? diagnostic song. From my bed in a friend?s cabin 30 miles north of Hilo this morning, the first sound to break the silence is the emphatic, repeated ?whit-cheer!? of the northern cardinal, a bird I grew up hearing in southern Michigan. Next comes the soft cooing of Asian spotted and zebra doves, followed by the occasional harsh notes of the common myna, an import from India. Finally, I hear the slurred warbles of the Japanese white-eye. Later, with a cup of coffee, looking out over the pasture and woodlots spreading down to the sea, I hear and see a rich and complex ecosystem, almost none of which belongs here.

It is quite conceivable that a casual visitor to Hawaii could spend a pleasant holiday of a week or two and not see a single native Hawaiian species. Nearly all native lowland ecosystems in Hawaii have been replaced by nonnative species, including nearly all plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Human residents and tourists concentrate themselves in these areas near the ocean, so it is even possible to grow up in many parts of Hawaii thinking that mynas, doves, papaya, eucalyptus, geckos and even mosquitoes have always been here.

To see, hear and smell native Hawaiian forests, you need to get away from the beaches and go up in elevation where most of the exotic birds disappear. Our research in these kipuka forests is aimed at understanding how kipuka size and introduced rats influence kipuka food webs and the native birds. But if the birds in these kipuka are imperiled, some listed and others being considered for listing under the Endangered Species Act, Hawaii is also home to a few bird species even worse off.

To see what intensive care looks like for the most critically endangered birds, I spend a morning at the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center in Volcano, Hawaii. Rich Switzer, manager for the Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program at the San Diego Zoo, meets me at the gate, and we drive up to a compound of one-story buildings scattered within a sparse ohia forest. The mission of Keauhou is to conserve the most critically endangered Hawaiian birds through captive breeding and, with careful planning, reintroduce them back into the wild.

We remove our shoes, a common practice in Hawaii, but here a precaution against spreading disease. We first tour a darkened hallway with rooms on both sides and small vertical windows along the walls, looking into aviaries housing palila, Maui parrotbill, puaiohi and apapane. It is the breeding season, so we speak in whispers. There are only about 500 parrotbills left, and they are found only on a small part of Maui. The puaiohi is even rarer. It is one of only two endemic thrushes left in Hawaii and is found only at the highest elevations on Kaua?i.

Next, we visit the extensive aviaries dedicated to saving one of the rarest birds in the world ? the Hawaiian crow, called an ?alala, which no one has seen in the wild since 2002. Prior to the disappearance of the wild birds, a small population was established in captivity with the hope of preventing their extinction. We enter a control room with a dozen black-and-white screens streaming live video from each aviary. Lisa Komarczyk, a senior research associate at Keauhou, closely monitors a mated pair of ?alala and a nest platform covered with sticks assembled by the female. Lisa records how frequently the female nestles in the nest cup, a precursor to egg laying, and as we watch, a female named Moa Nui sits quietly as her mate perches in the background.

The ?alala is a relative of the crows, ravens and jays found across much of the globe. This family is among the smartest birds, with some species using tools and in other ways showing the capacity for complex thought and for cultural transmission of learned information. Today, with the ?alala facing extinction, such traits cut both ways. A greater capacity for learning might be advantageous as this bird struggles to survive in a changing world. Yet cultural information like where and when to find food and how best to react to predators is at least somewhat learned from experienced older birds. It does not take long in captivity for such abilities to disappear. An earlier effort to reintroduce ?alala into the wild failed in part because the native hawk, the ?io, was able to capture birds that may have been weakened by introduced disease or lost adaptive responses to the predator, or both.

As we watch the monitor, Rich points to a video screen showing a female sitting quietly on her nest. He and Lisa note some rhythmic head movements and contractions of the bird?s body. We note that the fine black feathers on the bird?s head have become erect, and the bird gives a subtle but distinct shudder. They?ve seen egg laying many times before, but for me, this is thrilling. I ask if they think she just laid, but they are noncommittal. The female shuffles a bit and rises to reveal a shiny spotted egg. Bending her head down, she uses her bill to delicately arrange the egg beneath her. She then settles her warm belly down over the egg and waits to see what the future will bring.

Rise Of The Machines: IP Traffic Is Poised To Quadruple By 2016, Driven By An Influx Of New Devices

terminator-3-poster-0Every year, Cisco issues its Visual Networking Index (VNI) to forecast the amount of data traffic will be used worldwide. The latest VNI forecast shows a massive uptick in data usage, from the 369 Exabytes of IP traffic used worldwide in 2011 to approximately 1.3 zettabytes in 2016. According to Cisco, that rapid growth in data traffic will be driven by a proliferation of connected devices, ever-increasing broadband connectivity, and greater adoption of IP video worldwide. So what's driving that explosion in traffic? For one thing, an increase in the total number of devices that are connected to the Internet. With the proliferation of smart phones, tablets, connected TVs and other smart devices (think broadband-enabled washing machines, refrigerators and the like), folks are no longer just connecting to the Internet via PCs.

Apple?to hold?keynote event?on June 11

16 hrs.

Apple just confirmed that?its keynote event?will take?place on Monday, June 11,?during?the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).?As usual, expectations are high ? the event potentially?brings a new product?announcement?or two.

The keynote will take place at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET on June 11. Apple typically kicks WWDC off with such an event, so no one's surprised by its appearance on the WWDC schedule. Instead, the focus is on whether or not a new product will be announced when?Apple CEO Tim Cook steps onto a stage in San Francisco, California two weeks from now.

As I've explained when I reviewed what we can expect to hear from Apple, both at WWDC and for the rest of the year, the Cupertino-based company is prone to releasing major iOS updates during the summer.?And besides, WWDC ??as its name implies ??is a global crossroads for Mac and iOS developers, and generally focuses on software, rather than hardware. So, if I were placing?bets on what will be announced at WWDC 2012, I'd put my big money on iOS 6.

Of course ??with the exception of the iPhone 4S ??every new iPhone model hit the?shelves in either June or July. This pattern has many believing that the next-generation Apple smartphone will be announced during WWDC.?Unfortunately for those hopeful folks,?most recent reports shoot down the idea?that the next iPhone will make an appearance on that day.

If you want to read more about this?? and other Apple-themed?? speculation, I suggest heading over to our recent rumor round-up. And once you're done with that, hit the comments and tell us what you think Apple's keynote event?will bring.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Brothers sentenced to death in separate states

Rodney Berget lives in a single cell on South Dakota's death row, rarely leaving the tiny room where he awaits execution for bludgeoning a prison guard to death with a pipe during an attempted escape.

For Berget's immediate family, his fate is somewhat familiar. He is the second member of the clan to be sentenced to death. His older brother was convicted in 1987 of killing a man for his car. Roger Berget spent 13 years on Oklahoma's death row until his execution in 2000 at age 39.

The Bergets are not the first pair of siblings to be condemned. Record books reveal at least three cases of brothers who conspired to commit crimes and both got the death penalty. But these two stand out because their crimes were separated by more than 600 miles and 25 years.

"To have it in different states in different crimes is some sort of commentary on the family there," said Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, which tracks death penalty trends.

The siblings' journey from the poverty of their South Dakota childhood to stormy, crime-ridden adult lives shows the far-reaching effects of a damaged upbringing ? and the years of havoc wrought by two men who developed what the courts called a wanton disregard for human life.

Rodney Berget is scheduled to die later this year, potentially ending the odyssey that began when the two boys were born into a family that already had four kids.

A former prison principal described Rodney as a "throwaway kid" who never had a chance at a productive life. A lawyer for Roger recalled him as an "ugly duckling" with little family support.

The boys were born after the family moved from their failed farm in rural South Dakota to Aberdeen, a city about 20 miles away. Roger arrived in 1960. Rodney came along two years later.

His farming dreams dashed, patriarch Benford Berget went to work for the state highway department. Rosemary Berget took a night job as a bar manager at the local Holiday Inn.

The loss of the farm and the new city life seemed to strain the family and the couple's marriage. When the family moved to town, "things kind of fell apart," Bonnie Engelhart, the eldest Berget sibling, testified in 1987.

Benford Berget, away on business, was rarely around. When he was home, he drank and become physically abusive, lawyers for the brothers later said.

By the 1970s, the couple divorced, and Roger and Rodney started getting into trouble. Roger skipped school. Rodney started stealing. Soon, they were taking cars. Both went to prison for the first time as teens.

Roger Berget enjoyed a rare period of freedom in 1982 and met a woman while hitchhiking. The two started a relationship, and the woman gave birth to a child the next year. But Roger didn't get to see his son often because he was soon behind bars again, this time in Oklahoma. And for a far more sinister crime.

Roger and a friend named Michael Smith had decided to steal a random car from outside an Oklahoma City grocery store. The two men spotted 33-year-old Rick Patterson leaving the store on an October night in 1985. After abducting him at gunpoint, they put Patterson in the trunk and concluded he would have to be killed to prevent him from identifying his captors.

They drove the car to a deserted spot outside the city and shot Patterson in the back of the head and neck, blowing away the lower half of his face.

A year later, Berget pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to death on March 12, 1987. An appeals court threw out a death sentence for Smith, who was later sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Less than three months after Roger was sentenced to death, Rodney Berget, then 25 and serving time for grand theft and escape, joined five other inmates in breaking out of the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.

The men greased their bodies with lotion, slipped through a hole in an air vent and then cut through window bars in an auto body shop at the prison. Berget was a fugitive for more than a month.

Thirteen years passed before Roger Berget was executed by lethal injection on June 8, 2000. His younger brother was still in prison in South Dakota.

Then in 2002, the younger Berget was released. His sister and her husband threw Rodney his first-ever birthday party when he turned 40.

But the good days were numbered because a year later, he was sentenced to life in prison for attempted murder and kidnapping. He headed back to the South Dakota State Penitentiary ? this time for good.

Then Rodney got to talking with a fellow inmate named Eric Robert about a goal they shared: to escape ? or die trying.

The plan was months in the making. The inmates figured they would corner a solitary guard ? any guard would do ? and beat him with a pipe before covering his face with plastic wrap.

Once the guard was dead, Robert would put on the dead man's uniform and push a box with Berget inside as the prison gates opened for a daily delivery. The two would slip through the walls unnoticed.

On the morning of April 12, 2011, the timing seemed perfect. Ronald "R.J." Johnson was alone in a part of the prison where inmates work on upholstery, signs, custom furniture and other projects. Johnson wasn't supposed to be working that day ? it was his 63rd birthday. But he agreed to come in because of a scheduling change.

After attacking Johnson, Robert and Berget made it outside one gate. But they were stopped by another guard before they could complete their escape through the second gate. Both pleaded guilty.

In a statement to a judge, Rodney acknowledged he deserved to die.

"I knew what I was doing, and I continued to do it," Berget said. "I destroyed a family. I took away a father, a husband, a grandpa."

His execution, scheduled for September, is likely to be delayed to allow the State Supreme Court time to conduct a mandatory review.

Rodney Berget's lawyer, Jeff Larson, has declined to comment on the case outside of court. Rodney did not respond to letters sent to the penitentiary.

The few members of the Berget family who survive are reluctant to talk about how seemingly normal boys turned into petty criminals and then into convicted killers of the rarest kind: brothers sentenced to death.

Dieter, of the Death Penalty Information Center, said some families of the condemned remain involved in appeals. But others see no reason to preserve connections.

"There's no light at the end of it," he said. "What happens at the end is execution."

Mark Landsbaum: California's risky bet on Facebook

California government may receive a windfall from huge capital-gains taxes on the sale of Facebook stock following the Palo Alto social-networking behemoth's recent initial public offering.

Or not.

Some were disappointed that the stock opened at $38 only to drop within a few days to $31.

A worst-case scenario for Gov. Jerry Brown and his Democratic Party colleagues desperate to shore up the state budget would be if resales of Facebook stock kept declining in value, not only eliminating capital gains, but providing tax deductions for selling shares at less than their purchase price.

The point isn't whether Facebook is a risky investment. It may or may not enrich the state's treasury. Brown estimated as much as $1.5 billion in tax revenue by fiscal year end.

But Moody's Investor Services warned: "Because capital-gains revenues are volatile and difficult to forecast, there is no guarantee that the state will receive the amount" it estimates, adding, "the state could receive much less, or much more."

The point is, Brown and friends don't know, one way or the other.

Nevertheless, as always, the powers that be in Sacramento put the best face on the prospects. And plan to spend accordingly. Their spending plans almost always outstrip their ability to fleece, ahem, make that to tax Californians.

What if Brown put the people he served first? Then he wouldn't continually disappoint. Brown's budget assumes his $8.5 billion tax increase will pass in November. Why not budget for it not passing? "He has," you say? Well, he has a contingency to trigger spending cuts if it doesn't pass.

That's not the same. It's a fundamentally flawed approach. It builds in disappointment. Brown should operate the way good businesses do. They underpromise and overdeliver. That minimizes disappointment and, occasionally, pleasantly surprises those served.

Instead, Brown overpromises, and consequently nearly always underdelivers. That maximizes disappointment. And leaves those served grumbling.

When ambitious promises fail to materialize, underserved people become irritated, feeling victimized by false advertisements. In the private sector, repeatedly overpromising and underdelivering results in customers who stop buying, and flee.

Brown's customers can't stop buying what government sells. But they can flee. And they have been, to other states.

Brown's revised proposed budget for the coming fiscal year, starting July 1, would spend a combined $224 billion in its general, special, bond and federal funds. That's $30 billion more than the state spent in 2007-08, the year before the recession hit.

If anything is obvious, it's that the top priority for Brown and fellow Democrats is getting more of the people's money, not serving people well.

They resemble Rocco, the gangster character in the 1948 movie "Key Largo," portrayed by Edward G. Robinson. Rocco was a ruthless mobster, and single-minded. What did Rocco want?

"He wants more. Don't you, Rocco?" says the character played by Humphrey Bogart.

"That's it! More," Rocco beams. "That's right, I want more!"

"Will you ever get enough? Will you, Rocco?"

"Well, I never have. No, I guess I won't."

The Capitol crowd resembles Rocco. They always want more tax money, and they have yet to get enough.

Brown laments that the general fund portion of his budget is $17 billion short of how much he wants to spend. He doesn't remind voters that, as the Wall Street Journal's Alyssa Finley pointed out, for "several years legislators have been using special funds (fees earmarked for specific purposes) to pay for programs that are usually financed by general fund spending." Instead, Brown says he needs more ? another $8.5 billion from taxpayers, to whom he literally has pleaded to increase their own taxes at the polls in November.

Will he ever get enough? To ask the question is to answer it.

Brown & Co. are like slick grifters, who con naive grandmotherly types. They promise great rewards, perhaps a gilded high-speed locomotive, or they pull at the heartstrings: "It's for the children."

They do whatever it takes to get granny to the bank to withdrawal her savings, using whatever pretense that works. Once her life savings are liquid, the old shell game soon separates the foolish taxpayers, uh, grandmothers, from their money.

Brown wants to persuade voters to approve just one more "temporary" tax increase. Even though the Capitol mob said the same thing in 2009, the last time they tried to shove a temporary tax increase down voters' throats. Voters responded with a loud "No," by 2-1 at the polls, probably because the vote came only months after the Legislature had shoved an even larger temporary tax increase down taxpayers' throats, on the promise it would be the last time.

More. It's the Sacramento motto. It should be embossed on their business cards.

In 2006, the Legislature celebrated saving the Earth from global warming by passing the arrogantly named Global Warming Solutions Act. We suspected it was more about control and money than temperatures.

Sure enough. Global warming, the nonthreatening condition that has risen and fallen for centuries before SUVs and smokestacks, remains unsolved. But the Act enabled Brown's Air Resources Board to impose a cap-and-trade scheme to force companies to pay billions to the state for the privilege of doing what they've always done, emit harmless CO2.

That pot of gold promises to provide Sacramento's tax-and-spenders much more of what they want most. Other people's money.

Earlier this year Brown admitted he hopes to use billions pried from industrial emitters' wallets to spend on his pet project, an all-but-gilded bullet train. If you wonder whether a train that requires massive construction, generating plenty of CO2 emissions in the process, is a tenuous link to fighting global warming, you're not alone.

But that's the M.O. of those who want "more." The Legislature previously sought to snatch cities and counties' gasoline and property taxes because, well, because it could. State lawmakers grabbed cities' and counties' redevelopment funds, because they could.

The Capitol gang even "borrowed" money designated for public schools to shore up gaps elsewhere in the budget. Because they could. Most recently, they want to use $400 million from a national settlement by banks earmarked for foreclosure prevention and investigation of fraud to pay the state's bills instead. Because they can.

When the governor emerges every January to declare yet another chapter in the government's ongoing saga of too-little revenue, too-much-spending, one might suspect he's not very good at budgeting.

We suspect Brown is brighter than he appears. We think he knows the initial 130-mile stretch of track for his high-speed train simply will squander $6 billion in state and federal funds. He reads the newspaper. He knows not another dime of federal funding will arrive any time in the foreseeable future.

Brown knows that if he's going to get more money, he first must squander the initial $6 billion. Once the seal is broken, and voter-approved bonds are sold to finance the dead-end train's initial leg, then it will be easier to persuade people that the remaining $6 billion in bonds should be sold, too. Even though that still would leave the train $50 billion to $100 billion short of what is needed to complete the project, it won't matter. Billions will be liquid. Fungible. That will make it possible to divert the cash for other spending plans. Time for the old shell game. If you doubt it, just ask cities and counties.

Brown and Capitol Democrats desperately seek jackpots, like crazed gamblers hoping the next roll of the dice will make up for their string of bad bets.

But they have a reverse Midas touch, spreading the poison inherent in taxation. Everything they touch wilts and dies. Witness the unmistakable exodus of taxpaying Californians and job-producing businesses to other states. In fact, these taxers and spenders are Rumplestiltskin in reverse. They spin straw from California's one-time Golden State.

Our hunch is that this won't end soon. Not as long as Brown & Co. can beg, borrow and steal: beg voters to "Please" approve more taxes, as the governor recently did; borrow, as the Legislature has from school funds; and steal from cities and counties.

Grandmas, lock up your savings. The Capitol Gang is on the prowl for "more."

New genetic clues to Parkinson's disease | Health & Fitness Articles ...

The researchers say their study could be a starting point for further investigations into the causes of Parkinson?s disease s.The researchers say the study is the product of the largest genetic analysis of Parkinson?s disease and never of 7.7 million possible variants were examined. Parkinson?s genetic roots

The study concluded that the results provide insight into the genetics of Parkinson?s disease if its cause and could provide molecular targets for future therapies.

We are optimistic that this therapy could prevent neurological problems and the long-term development in many of these children, Children?s Hospital of Denver researcher John P. Kinsella, MD, said in a press release. Kinsella led the other study.

The researchers say that six genetic factors that influence the apparent neurological disease have been previously identified. But a new study, researchers say they have now identified five more variants.

A new set of genetic variants has been involved in the search for genetic risk factors that can lead to the development of Parkinson?s disease.

Spiritual Friendship ? Walks with Yogi

?What if the leading energy in our lives were to be our heart and our heart?s cry? What if living a ?spiritual life? was actually synonymous with living a ?heart-centered life?? These are some of the questions I have been asking myself?and the answers have pushed me more and more into prioritizing what I am calling ?spiritual friendship.? What is spiritual friendship to me? It is the genuine meeting of two people who are vulnerable and open and truth-telling and available for actual contact and communion at the feeling level.

What this means is that interpersonal challenges can?t be healed on the meditation cushion or in solitary retreat. Wounds from relationship require the context of relationship for healing. This seems pretty obvious, huh? But as someone who has been a meditator now for almost three decades, this was not something that was obvious to me in the early stages of my journey. Somehow I thought I was going to open completely to the universe and all of its mystery without ever needing to relate closely and vulnerably with others.

What I am actually finding is that connecting with other people in a heart-centered way is not just about healing. It is actually the most rewarding and fulfilling part of my life. Period. There is something about being fully received by another person and fully receiving another person, without the need for any part to be edited or left out, that feels to me like the giving and receiving of the greatest soul nourishment that there is.?

-?Tami Simon, Founder and Publisher of Sounds True

Post 87

What Tami Simon describes so eloquently is the type of? healing relationships I have experienced in spiritual communities like my sangha, in Alanon, CODA,? and recently? in a wonderful? ?meet up? group called ?egonots.?? I know from my friends in AA they find the same. These relationships offer unconditional love and focus on who you are other than this? false, grasping, frightened ?self.?? The openness and? vulnerablity is greater in those relationships than most marriages and all romances.? Yet?

I still hear young women worrying about not finding ?love.?? I too remember pacing the earth on constant look-out for ?love? that would make life worth living.? Maybe young women now? no longer plan their entire future based on marriage and family, but the pressure is still there.? Witness the flourishing wedding planning businesses.? Much of this has to do with wanting to have children.? I recall being told by a friend that ?having children is what gives life meaning; it is the purpose of life.?? I did not have a child then and never ended up having children.? Is my life meaningless then?

?As soon as there is ?self?, there is selfishness. These two are very different, nonetheless, they are inseparable. The ?self arises, then selfishness comes?. Selfishness gives rise to love, greed, anger, hatred, fear, worry, frustration, envy, jealousy, possessiveness. All of these are aspects of selfishness. Love through fear and worry, are just different aspects of selfishness.?? ?Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, from Buddhism Now online magazine

What does the self need?? Everything. From whom?? Another self. ? And when that changes or lessens, as it always does, the self needs More. From another self, and yet another?.Or the self repeats its demands of one other for what could be decades.

What does your buddhanture need? To be love.

Enough said.

Allow me to offer an unpopular,? radical conclusion, one that I?m sure will raise many objections, but here it goes:? If we assume the self, the body and all the physical forms our mind creates constitute reality, then the purpose of life is, as my friend told me,? to procreate an extension of yourself.? However, if the purpose of life is to awaken from the illusion of self and see the unity of all that is, then it is not necessary to marry and procreate at all.

So you might say, that the love between husband and wife and children is the deepest love a human being can achieve.? And that is why women, especially, long for that from young ages.? Even gay people long for the same.? And the divorce rate is 50%.? We can only imagine the percentage of marriages mired in the selfishness of ?self? but unable or unwilling to change or grow.

What if, as Tami Simon, says, our societies valued love that is not aimed at the self? a selfless love? And I am not talking about the neurotic selflessness of all those who adopt the mother/wife as? martyr role. What if our dream was not of our wedding, our cake, our dress, our honeymoon, our children, our house, our cars?.?? The needs and desires and attachments of the self underlie the entire ?dream.?

I have watched the pain and loneliness of my single women friends as search and do not find love?there is real suffering for these women that can subsume all else. ? We fear we won?t find?? romance, passion,? our soul mates (definition:? someone who is what I want him or her to be).? Ironically, we eventually lose romance, passion or we divorce our ?soul mates.?

?Love through fear and worry, are just different aspects of selfishness.?

Love based on craving and desperation is no love at all?it is need; the need of wounded, frightened children.? This is the longing for parents, not partners?but this wound, as Tami Simon says, can be healed in a spiritual relationship, not a traditional relationship.? In the traditional model of love wounds are often exacerbated.? Yet this accepted model? is celebrated as the key to happiness and fulfillment.? How can children not follow that dream?? Why do we burden them with is illusion for the rest of their lives?

Am I proposing a hermit?s life?? Am I suggesting we all sit on the mat and meditate all alone for the rest of our lives.? Punish our ?selves? and try to be rid of them so we are not selfish? No.

I am suggesting what Tami Simon talks about:? The source of true love is a unique type of friendship, not a romantic or sexual bonanza.? What is a spiritual friendship??? It is aptly described by a quote from a Facebook friend in India:? When two minds with same interests come together they develop understanding, when two hearts with same feelings come together they create love. And when both mind and heart with common understandings and feelings come together, they create a beautiful relationship?Friendship!?

In the spiritual friendship I believe I am experiencing, I am not craving for? another to approve of my ?self,?? or to have the other do what my ?self? wants, to fill the needs my ?self? thinks must be filled.? In a spiritual friendship we love what is beyond the ?self? and what is common to everyone, buddhanature.? We strive to see buddhanature in each other and all others.? Our Minds open to the mystery of who we are beyond these two seemingly separate selves.? Far from fear, we are free to be apart, to aim for non-attachment that is grounded in universal love, agape. Only what does not change is true.? But what does not change is what is allowed to change, is not threatened by change:? The solid ground, the secure source of our buddhanature.? Buddha friend, I see your nature, I salute your nature, I feel comforted and loved by our shared changeless nature.? Buddha friend you appear in this body, with this face but also behind? all bodies, all faces.

No reason to seek another.? No reason to fear. ? When your friend appears you will be looking into the mirror of your own complete, unchanging nature.? Ah, true self, your nature is to be love, not seek it.

Astronauts float inside SpaceX Dragon capsule

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Sat May 26, 2012 12:25pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Astronauts aboard the International Space Station opened the hatch and floated inside a Space Exploration Technologies' Dragon capsule on Saturday, the first privately owned spaceship to reach the orbital outpost, NASA said.

Running ahead of schedule, station commander Oleg Kononenko and flight engineer Don Pettit opened the hatch to Dragon just before 6 a.m. EDT (1000 GMT), NASA mission commentator Josh Byerly reported from Mission Control in Houston.

The bell-shaped capsule, which was making its second test flight, arrived at the space station on Friday.

The crew wore protective masks and goggles, but the interior of Dragon, which is 350 cubic feet (10 cubic meters), about the size of a large walk-in closet, proved clean.

"There was no sign of any kind of (debris) floating around," Pettit radioed to Mission Control, adding that Dragon "smells like a brand new car."

"It looks like it carries about as much cargo as I could put in my pickup truck," Pettit later told reporters during an in-flight press conference.

"There's not enough room in here to hold a barn dance, but for transportation of crew up and down through Earth's atmosphere and into space, which is a rather short period of time, there's plenty of room in here for the envisioned crew," Pettit said.

Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, is working on a seven-passenger version of Dragon, which could be ready for test flights in 2015.

The capsule at the space station carries about 1,200 pounds (544 kg) of food and other supplies for the station, all non-essential items because NASA and SpaceX did not know beforehand if it would actually make it to the station.

Following Tuesday's launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, Dragon had to demonstrate that it could be commanded and controlled by operators on the ground as well as by the orbiting space station crew.

Dragon and SpaceX mission control in Hawthorne, California, aced two days of precision flying and systems tests, clearing the way for Dragon to fly within reach of the station's 58-foot (17.7 meter) robot arm on Friday.

BERTHING PORT

Astronauts snared the capsule at 9:56 a.m. EDT (1356 GMT) Friday as the two spacecraft zoomed around the planet at 17,500 mph (28,164 kilometers per hour). It was anchored into a berthing port on the station's Harmony connecting node a few hours later.

"You made history today and it firmly locked us into place and locked the future direction of the American space program in place," NASA administrator Charlie Bolden radioed to the crew later on Friday.

NASA's use of commercial spaceships to fly cargo - and eventually astronauts - to and from the station will ""revolutionize the way we carry out space exploration," Bolden added.

SpaceX and a second company, Orbital Sciences Corp, hold NASA contracts worth a combined $3.5 billion to fly cargo to the station.

Orbital plans to debut its Antares rocket and Cygnus capsule later this year.

NASA is reviewing proposals from at least four firms, including SpaceX, seeking funding under a related program to develop spaceships for flying astronauts as well. Awards are expected in August.

Since the retirement of the space shuttles last year, the United States is dependent on Russia to fly crews to the station, a $100 billion project of 15 nations. It hopes to break the Russian monopoly, which costs NASA about $400 million a year, in 2017.

Once unloaded, Dragon will be filled with about 1,300 pounds (590 kg) of equipment and science gear that need a ride back to Earth - the first big return load since the final shuttle flight last July.

Dragon is due to depart the station on Thursday and splash down in the Pacific Ocean about 250 miles off the coast of southern California later that day.

Although Motorola outed its Android Ice Cream Sandwich rollout plans back in February, we've only seen leaked glimpses of what its skinned version the OS would be like for its handsets. That's changed recently thanks to Motorola's Japanese website, where a new ICS landing page features nine demo videos showcasing the software on a Droid RAZR. Among the clips, which highlight features from updated icons to a revamped lockscreen, there's also a detailed look at the LapDock-friendly Webtop 3.0 UI. Sadly however, there isn't any new word on the rollout schedule past the update Moto detailed on the 18th. You can treat yourself to some of the eye candy by clicking past the break, and you'll find all the vids by hitting the source link below -- but do keep in mind that most of clips aren't voiced in English.

UN chief cites unacceptable violence in Syria - KWQC-TV6 News ...

By EDITH M. LEDERER
Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon blamed the Syrian government Friday for much of the "unacceptable levels of violence and abuses" occurring every day in violation of a U.N.-backed peace plan.

In a report to the U.N. Security Council obtained by the Associated Press, Ban cited the government's continuing use of heavy weapons, reports of shelling and "a stepped-up security crackdown by the authorities that has led to massive violations of human rights by government forces and pro-government militias."

Ban, who is scheduled to brief the Security Council on Wednesday, lamented that there has been only "small progress" on implementing the six-point plan brokered by international envoy Kofi Annan. He called on the government to keep its pledge to immediately stop the violence, pull heavy weapons and troops out of populated areas, allow humanitarian workers to help needy civilians and end human rights abuses.

Ban also called on all elements of the opposition to stop the violence and respect human rights.

The secretary-general said 271 of the 300 unarmed U.N. military observers authorized by the Security Council to help end the 15-month conflict are on the ground, and their deployment in key cities "appears to be having a calming effect."

Nonetheless, he said, "the overall level of violence in the country remains quite high" with daily incidents causing a large number of deaths and injuries, though at a lower scale than immediately before April 12 when a cease-fire was supposed to take effect.

"While the international effort is making some impact on the ground, unacceptable levels of violence and abuses are continuing in violation of ... the six-point plan," Ban said.

He said the situation "poses serious challenges" for the U.N. mission and the observers, who have been threatened and targeted, with their vehicles damaged and their movements restricted by crowds.

"This is a source of grave concern, and underscores the need to carefully consider the United Nations presence and next steps, taking into account the volatile and evolving security environment," Ban said.

The observers, he said, have seen "considerable physical destruction" in many locations from the conflict, with some opposition areas heavily damaged. They have also observed "that significant parts of some cities appear to be under the de facto control of opposition elements," he said.

(AP) ? As daylight disappeared and wind whipped loose dirt around the court, Novak Djokovic watched one last ace fly off Roger Federer's racket and end their thrill-a-minute semifinal at the 2011 French Open.

It's been nearly a year since that evening, and Djokovic hasn't lost a Grand Slam match since.

He's won 21 in a row, earning championships at Wimbledon in July, the U.S. Open in September, and the Australian Open in January. If Djokovic can prolong that run on the red clay of Roland Garros over the next two weeks, he will become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win four consecutive major tennis tournaments.

A remarkable achievement, to be sure. And one the 25-year-old Serb is trying not to expend too much energy pondering before the French Open, which starts Sunday.

"It would definitely mean the world to me ... but I haven't thought about that too much, because I do not want to put too much pressure on myself," the No. 1-ranked Djokovic said, then added with a laugh: "Pressure that I don't need at this moment, because I already have enough."

He insists he wants to view this tournament the way he would any year.

Federer's take? Essentially: Good luck with that, pal.

"The hard part is (the) same for everyone: Every point you play, every game you play, the pressure you face, and just answering the questions time and time again," said Federer, who twice fell one match shy of four Grand Slam titles in a row, losing in the French Open final to Rafael Nadal in 2006 and 2007.

"It's fun, because you're talking about the highest of accomplishments," Federer continued. "But at the end of the day, you just like to play the matches and not talk about it that much."

Nadal also went on a three-major winning streak ? at the French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open in 2010 ? but fell short of No. 4, losing in last year's Australian Open quarterfinals while hampered by a left leg muscle injury.

He dismissed the notion that he came close to equaling Laver, noting that he was three matches away, and said his happiness quotient today doesn't depend on whether or not things went well in Melbourne 16 months ago.

"Life continues," Nadal said, "and you keep working hard to try to be fit and be competitive for the next (match)."

There's another way in which Nadal and Federer were far from matching Laver ? as Djokovic would be, even if he wins his next seven matches. Rocket Rod pulled off his Grand Slams within a calendar year (the Australian left-hander also did it in 1962; Don Budge is the only other man to go 4 for 4).

Laver himself firmly believes there's a distinction to be made.

"People will say, 'He's going for a Grand Slam.' And I say, 'No, he's not doing that.' That wasn't the way this whole thing was set up," Laver explained last year. "It starts in January and ends in September ? starts with the Australian Open and ends with the U.S. Open."

None of the top three men is in action in Paris on Day 1. The schedule includes seven-time major champion Venus Williams in her first Grand Slam match since revealing she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease; past French Open champions Ana Ivanovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova; reigning U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur; and past U.S. Open title winners Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro.

Djokovic and No. 3 Federer will be on court Monday, while No. 2 Nadal is slated to begin his attempt for a record-breaking seventh French Open title on Tuesday.

"He is always favorite for this tournament. He even was last year," said Djokovic, who beat Nadal in seven tournament finals in 2011 but lost both clay-court finals they contested against each other this season. "Always No. 1 favorite, because he's just what he is on clay courts, you know. He's (the) most successful tennis player ever to play on this surface."

Federer agreed, saying it's "crazy to even talk about" anyone other than Nadal as the man to beat. Nadal, who turns 26 during the tournament, is 45-1 for his career at the French Open. The only man to beat him, two-time runner-up Robin Soderling, is not in the field this year.

"I played him so many times here," Federer said of the Spaniard. "I know how incredible he can be here."

He is 0-5 against Nadal at Roland Garros, including in the finals of 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011, when Federer failed to follow up on his masterful semifinal performance that ended Djokovic's 43-match winning streak.

Federer's only French Open title was in 2009, when Nadal's lone loss came in the fourth round. That allowed Federer to complete a career Grand Slam, something Nadal did the following year. Djokovic can be the eighth man to achieve the feat.

To do that, though, Djokovic will need to make it past the French Open semifinals for the first time.

And guess who he was drawn to meet at that stage? Yes, Federer again.

"I had the best year and a half of my career. I believe that I'm at the peak of my career at this moment," Djokovic said. "I definitely want to use this confidence that I have and try to make a good result here in Roland Garros."

Does medical marijuana help with the pain of ... - Health and Fitness

Question by jmminassian: Does medical marijuana help with the pain of lupus & rheumatoid arthritis?
Hello,
I have lupus & rheumatoid arthritis and I?m at the end of my rope. My doctors can?t treat my condition & I have tried everything. Right now I?m on a medicine ?cocktail? of morphine, vicodin & oxycodone which I?m sure is killing my liver. I have never done marijuana- not even in my younger days. I recently talked to someone else with lupus & they told me that medical marijuana helps her get through her day. Does anyone have insight or experience with this? I?m not sure what to do at this point?.. I?m just in pain?.

I have also been through this myself. On Fentanyl patches, other painkillers, muscle relaxers, sleep meds, etc. I have severe fibromyalgia, CFIDS and arthritic pain. But cannabis is the only thing that helps when the pain meds and muscle relaxers won?t. And it also doesn?t make me groggy & lose sight of what I should be doing. I just feel normal when I use it. If I?m in a very bad flare up, it may not make me able to do a regular day?s worth of stuff, but I can tolerate the pain much, much better. I have no side effects from it as I do from other medications. I?d be more than happy to tell you everything I know about medical cannabis (which is a lot), all about my personal experience and what the research says. Just email me if you?d like more information. I?d love to help. You can message me through my Yahoo Answers profile. Peace to you.
