TiVo Mini

The TiVo Mini ($99.99 direct, plus $5.99 monthly service fee) is a media hub made to work with the four-tuner TiVo Premiere 4 and the TiVo Premiere Elite , which is now the Premiere XL4. Like the competing Dish Network Joey, it's an add-on to a primary TiVo DVR rather than a stand-alone product. It does what it aims to do, letting you watch live programming or your TiVo recordings in another room of the house, with some drawbacks. The thing is, though, if you're a TiVo fan with current equipment, you probably already have a DVR in your bedroom (or wherever else you want to watch TiVo recordings) and you don't need the Mini. It isn't the product TiVo needs to bring new subscribers into the fold, nor is it the thing that will keep older Series 2 and Series 3 TiVo owners from jumping ship to a satellite or cable company DVR.

Design and Features
The TiVo Mini is a black square block with beveled side panels. It measures 1.3 inches tall and 6.1 inches square, which is quite a bit larger than other media hubs like the Apple TV and the Roku 3. The top of the TiVo Mini is perforated for cooling, and since it doesn't have a built in hard drive it features silent passive cooling. The back of the box features HDMI (a cable is included), Gigabit Ethernet, MoCA, and USB ports, and mini-jacks for component and A/V composite video. The component and composite video outputs need adapters, but HDMI, MoCA, and Ethernet works as is. The front panel simply has a TiVo Mini logo and a tiny LED that shows that the media hub is powered up and active. The box ships with the standard curvy TiVo remote.

TiVo Mini: BackSetup is a simple affair for TiVo veterans, but a little convoluted for novices. Just plug the Mini into the same network your TiVo is on, and perform a couple of steps. The primary networking method is MoCA (multimedia over Coax), where you need to make sure the TiVo Premiere 4 or TiVo Premiere XL4 is hooked up to both the cable connection and to your wired/wireless router. You can alternately connect the TiVo Mini directly to your TiVo Premiere 4/XL4 DVR via Cat 5 Ethernet cable (using a single cable or through the router). Unfortunately, if you're using a 802.11g adapter on your TiVo Premiere, it won't work with the TiVo Mini, in this case, consider picking up a third-party MoCA network adapter as a bridge to your TiVo boxes. After that, hook the TiVo Mini up to your HDTV via HDMI or a component video adapter.

After both TiVo boxes are hooked up, you then need to dedicate at least one tuner on your TiVo Premiere to the TiVo Mini. It's one of the few parameters you'll have to change on your TiVo Premiere DVR, the command is buried in the settings menu. You'll need a four-tuner TiVo to do this, and as such two-tuner TiVo Premiere and TiVo Series 3/HD DVRs won't work with the TiVo Mini. Once everything is set up, you can view both live TV and TiVo recordings on the TiVo Mini. Think of the TiVo Mini as a replacement for the set top box if you were running your cable company's multi-room DVR. TiVo is reportedly working on a dynamic tuner solution so you won't have to dedicate a tuner to the Mini, but for now, this is the best you'll get.

In theory, life is good after you run through the initial setup. The TiVo Mini can view all the recordings on any shared TiVo Premiere 4/XL4, as well as programs from Hulu Plus, Spotify, YouTube, and other apps. TiVo Mini has a protracted version of the TiVo Premiere's menu system showing most, but not all of the same options as the TiVo Premiere. Menu selection and reaction was microseconds slower than on the DVR, but the difference was barely perceivable. You can only view videos on the dedicated tuner (no switching back and forth between tuners as on the Premiere DVR), and some services were missing like Netflix and Amazon Prime. You'll have to use the main TiVo Premiere box or other device to view those services. Since we're nitpicking, Ethernet or MoCA may not be available in same room as the TV. This is a situation where you'd want wireless connectivity, but the TiVo Mini doesn't do Wi-Fi. We tried an alternative with a powerline-to-Ethernet networking adapter, which was somewhat successful. While we were able to set up the TiVo Mini over powerline, we experienced video stuttering on HD channels. Stuttering became worse when viewing HD videos with lots of cuts, like the BBC's Top Gear, while HD programs with long takes like Ken Burn's PBS documentaries displayed smoothly. The TiVo menu system and SD video channels performed fine with the powerline adapter.

This brings us to another of the TiVo Mini's problems. While other media hubs like the Apple TV, Roku 3, and Sony Internet Player With Google TV are active after your initial purchase, the TiVo Mini requires either a $6 monthly fee or a $150 up-front lifetime subscription. The subscription really should be built into the purchase price of the box, but then you'd be buying a $250 set top box instead of looking at the TiVo Mini's more attractive $99 price tag. It's not a lot, but it effectively doubles the price tag of the TiVo Mini. If you want to put a positive spin on it, you may be saving $10-15 a month on a cable box rental.

The TiVo Mini is a set top box for the TiVo fanatic who also has new enough equipment to use it. It's not really innovative enough to bring new users into the fold. If you're just getting TiVo, you're a prime target for the Mini since you can avoid buying another DVR, which requires an additional cable card. That said, even TiVo fans will miss functionality like Netflix and Amazon, and even the most die-hard TiVo fan will gripe at paying extra for another subscription. The TiVo Mini is a solid idea, with passable execution, but a few fatal flaws. Just like last year's TiVo Stream, which lets you stream TiVo programming to your phone or tablet, but comes with its own set of limitations, the Mini is not the game changer TiVo users have been waiting for.

Sector Leaders' Stock Little Changed; LinkedIn ... - Investors.com

The three Sector Leaders ended little changed Wednesday, even though the general market bounced back from big losses to finish with a split decision.

LinkedIn (LNKD) was the only gainer among the trio of Sector Leaders. It reversed early losses and climbed 1.83, or 1%, to 177.88. Wednesday marked its second straight gain after reversing lower Monday. Turnover edged down from Tuesday's pace and ended 49% below average. Most of LinkedIn's gains this month have come on below-average trade.

The stock has yet to test its 50-day moving average or offer another buying opportunity since breaking out in January. LinkedIn has rallied as much as 57% from a 116.97 handle buy point. It also has not given any sell signals.

FleetCor Technologies (FLT) gave up 64 cents to 76.05, as it eased from Tuesday's record high. News of the company buying GE Capital's Australian fuel card business from late Tuesday failed to lift its shares. On the plus side, Wednesday's turnover came in below average, suggesting that the big money didn't dump shares.

The stock ended 4% past a 73 buy point from a three-weeks-tight pattern. FleetCor broke out Friday in almost three-times average trade.

HomeAway (AWAY) ended mildly lower for a second straight session, losing a nickel to 33.13. Volume moved up from Tuesday's pace, but still ended 34% below average. The stock has been a big winner since gapping past a 27.57 buy point from a cup base Feb 21.

The Austin, Texas-based firm operates an online marketplace for vacation rental homes. In 2012, earnings grew 30% to 48 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters see profit rising 33% to 64 cents a share this year.

Germany urged to grant Muslims days off for religious festivals

BERLIN (Reuters) - Muslims living in Germany should be granted two days of official holiday a year to mark important religious festivals, a leading member of the country's Muslim community said, drawing criticism from within Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling conservatives.

Aiman Mazyek told Thursday's edition of the regional Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) that providing German Muslims with a legal holiday in the holy fasting month of Ramadan and another during the Feast of the Sacrifice would be "an important sign of integration".

"It would underline tolerance in our society," said Mazyek, who is chairman of Germany's Central Council of Muslims, adding that Muslims in public services such as the police could stand in for colleagues over Christian holidays like Easter.

Germany has sometimes faced accusations of not doing enough to integrate its Muslim population, estimated to number around four million, mostly of Turkish origin. But some German conservatives say the onus is on Muslims to adapt to the traditions and customs of a mainly Christian-based society.

Wolfgang Bosbach, a prominent member of Merkel's traditionally Catholic Christian Democrats (CDU), rejected Mazyek's call, saying there was "no Islamic tradition in Germany" and that religious holidays here reflected the country's Christian heritage.

Another CDU lawmaker, Patrick Sensburg, urged respect among Germans for existing Christian holidays and more shopping restrictions on Sundays.

Guntram Schneider, social minister in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia for the center-left Social Democrats, expressed concern over the economic costs of giving Muslims two days off.

Friday and Monday will be public holidays in Germany marking Easter.

Trees used to create recyclable, efficient solar cell

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

Solar cells are just like leaves, capturing the sunlight and turning it into energy. It's fitting that they can now be made partially from trees.

Georgia Institute of Technology and Purdue University researchers have developed efficient solar cells using natural substrates derived from plants such as trees. Just as importantly, by fabricating them on cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) substrates, the solar cells can be quickly recycled in water at the end of their lifecycle.

The technology is published in the journal Scientific Reports, the latest open-access journal from the Nature Publishing Group.

The researchers report that the organic solar cells reach a power conversion efficiency of 2.7 percent, an unprecedented figure for cells on substrates derived from renewable raw materials. The CNC substrates on which the solar cells are fabricated are optically transparent, enabling light to pass through them before being absorbed by a very thin layer of an organic semiconductor. During the recycling process, the solar cells are simply immersed in water at room temperature. Within only minutes, the CNC substrate dissolves and the solar cell can be separated easily into its major components.

Georgia Tech College of Engineering Professor Bernard Kippelen led the study and says his team's project opens the door for a truly recyclable, sustainable and renewable solar cell technology.

"The development and performance of organic substrates in solar technology continues to improve, providing engineers with a good indication of future applications," said Kippelen, who is also the director of Georgia Tech's Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics (COPE). "But organic solar cells must be recyclable. Otherwise we are simply solving one problem, less dependence on fossil fuels, while creating another, a technology that produces energy from renewable sources but is not disposable at the end of its lifecycle."

To date, organic solar cells have been typically fabricated on glass or plastic. Neither is easily recyclable, and petroleum-based substrates are not very eco-friendly. For instance, if cells fabricated on glass were to break during manufacturing or installation, the useless materials would be difficult to dispose of. Paper substrates are better for the environment, but have shown limited performance because of high surface roughness or porosity. However, cellulose nanomaterials made from wood are green, renewable and sustainable. The substrates have a low surface roughness of only about two nanometers.

"Our next steps will be to work toward improving the power conversion efficiency over 10 percent, levels similar to solar cells fabricated on glass or petroleum-based substrates," said Kippelen. The group plans to achieve this by optimizing the optical properties of the solar cell's electrode.

Purdue School of Materials Engineering associate professor Jeffrey Youngblood collaborated with Kippelen on the research.

A provisional patent on the technology has been filed with the U.S. Patent Office.

There's also another positive impact of using natural products to create cellulose nanomaterials. The nation's forest product industry projects that tens of millions of tons of them could be produced once large-scale production begins, potentially in the next five years.

The research is the latest project by COPE, which studies the use and development of printed electronics. Last year the center created the first-ever completely plastic solar cell.

Prime Minister hopes for peace with Kurdish rebels

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey's prime minister said he hopes this week's spring festival, which is celebrated by Kurds, will herald the start of a peaceful resolution of the country's nearly 30-year-old conflict with Kurdish rebels.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan spoke Tuesday ahead of Thursday's spring Newroz festivities, when jailed Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan said he would make a "historic call" toward peace. Kurdish officials have said Ocalan is expected to reveal his road map for peace, including a possible cease-fire declaration and a timetable for his fighters' retreat from Turkey.

Turkish officials have been holding talks with Ocalan on his prison island off Istanbul with the aim of persuading his autonomy-seeking group to disarm. The conflict with Ocalan's Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984.

"May this Newroz bring hope, may Newroz, so to say, be the insemination of the process for a solution," Erdogan told lawmakers in parliament.

Turkey has admitted to holding failed, secret peace talks with the PKK before. The latest initiative is being carried out more publicly and follows a surge in violence last summer that killed hundreds of people.

The government has said the rebel group would lay down arms and withdraw several thousands of fighters from Turkey's territory as part of the peace efforts, but has not revealed what steps Turkey will take.

Erdogan ruled out any "bargaining, concessions, back-stepping" or steps that would "hurt" the families of the violence's victims.

"Whatever step we take, we take it for (the welfare) of the people and the country," Erdogan said.

The PKK is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and Europe and Ocalan is serving a life sentence for leading the insurgency. He said in a message relayed by Kurdish legislators on Monday that he would outline all the "military and political steps" of the peace process on Thursday.

But Ocalan also suggested that Turkey's parliament needed to take steps to advance the peace process.

Kurds want the government to carry out reforms that would increase Kurdish rights. The Hurriyet newspaper said Ocalan was also seeking guarantees that his rebel fighters would not be attacked as they withdraw from Turkey to bases in northern Iraq.

Turkish forces reportedly attacked PKK guerrillas as they retreated in 1999 while obeying orders from Ocalan who had appealed for peace soon after his capture that year, as well as during another unilateral decision to withdraw in 2004. The PKK has declared unilateral cease-fires on several occasions in the past but they were ignored by the state.

Turkey's Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin said the rebels' withdrawal would likely start this month and continue to the end of the year.

Spinners singer Bobbie Smith dies

By Reuters

Bobbie Smith, the lead singer for the 1970s vocal group The Spinners, whose hits include "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" and "Games People Play," has died, the group's manager said.

Smith, 76, passed away on Saturday in Orlando from complications from pneumonia and flu, Nat Burgess said in a statement.

Smith, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in November, had also been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He died due to compromised immunity from the aggressive treatment, Burgess said.

"One of Bobbie Smith's final requests was to make people aware of his cancer, so as to once again bring to the forefront the many dangers of smoking. He will be dearly missed by all of his friends and colleagues in the music world," said Burgess.

The Grammy-nominated Spinners had seven top 10 singles and five gold albums, with hits on both the pop and R&B charts, including "Rubberband Man," "One of a Kind (Love Affair)," "Working My Way Back to You/Forgive Me Girl" and "I'll Be Around."

Two other original members of the group had died - Billy Henderson in 2007 and Pervis Jackson in 2008.

The Spinners, including the last remaining original member, Henry Fambrough, and new singers Charlton Washington, Jessie Peck and Marvin Taylor, performed up until last month, when they appeared at a casino in El Cajon, California.

Player lives on as character in favorite game after losing cancer battle

A gamer who lost his life to cancer will be memorialized in the latest version of the "Total War" series of games ? his favorite, and the creators of which he was able to pay a visit thanks to a local charity.

The player, James (whose last name was withheld for his family's privacy) had liver cancer, and was told in mid-2012 that he had only a few months to live. He was a huge fan of the "Total War" series of games. Charity organization The Willow Foundation arranged it so that last summer, James, 24, could stop by Creative Assembly's studios in Horsham, U.K., where the games are developed.

As it turned out, the latest game in the franchise, "Rome: Total War II," was announced the day before James's visit. The Creative Assembly team was "moved, and humbled" by their fan's passion and knowledge of their games, and James was allowed to be the first person to play the new game, taking part in the siege of Carthage ? typical of the large-scale warfare that has made the games so popular.

But the best was yet to come: After James had played the game, provided feedback and asked questions, an artist on the team suggested they actually put James in the game. Needless to say, he accepted.

The image above shows the process of turning James's picture into a 3-D model for use in the game. What rank and position his character occupies in the game likely depends on how people play ? we reached out for more info on this from Creative Assembly, in case future players would like to see the virtual James in action when the game comes out late this year.

James died not long after his visit to the studio. Craig Laycock, Creative Assembly's community manager, said that James's enthusiasm in the face of cancer and death affected the whole team.

"His approach to life was an inspiration ? not only to me, but to the whole studio,"he wrote in a blog post. "When I say that, you have to understand what I mean. I don?t mean inspiration in the throwaway word sense. I mean a genuine inspiration ? altering my perspective permanently."

Cinnamon Soho Easter menu, 5 Kingly Street, London W1B 5PF ...

You?ve heard the phase ?Christmas has come early?. For us it was Easter that came early? We were invited back to Cinnamon Soho?to sample?Vivek Singh?s?Easter egg-inspired menu and inspired it was too. (Read our full review of?Cinnamon Soho and?Cinnamon Kitchen.)

The spark that must have ignited this ?all ball? menu surely must have been Vivek?s?now-famous Bangla Scotch Egg which was included in ?The 100 Best Small Dishes in London 2012? category by Time Out.

Before I explain the menu I just had lift these pun-tastic lines straight from the press release? ?An Egg-cellent way to celebrate Easter and for just ?30 per person, diners can get egg-cited about a three-course menu inclusive of a cocktail to start and a selection of sharing appetisers?.

And how about this eggs-tra comment? ?Combining both sweet and savoury, head chef Ramachandran Raju?s menu takes our notion of the traditional Easter egg and turns it on its head, with delicious results to put a spiced spring in your step.?A cracking good way to mark the occasion.?

Sorry guys, you know we love you really, and I don?t want to sound egg-otistic but my puns have the eggs factor and I?m no spring chicken!

Anyway, here is the full menu?

Cinnamon Soho Easter menu, We Love Food, It's All We Eat

Tastes like Christmas, but still ?flipping? good!

Cocktail

These vegetarian kofta eggs were egg-cellent!

Main Course

?Nargis? lamb kofta curry with fragrant chicken biryani

?You crack me up?? Vermicelli?s jokes had Kulfi in pieces!

Dessert

Spiced mango and pistachio kulfi, ?dum? cooked vermicelli

Right then, from the top. The?Easter Egg Flip tasted more of Christmas than Easter. The?Cognac, Baileys, sugar and grated nutmeg gave it a real festive flavour. But then again what does Easter taste like apart from chocolate? And maybe that was just too obvious for?Vivek and?Ramachandran.

The shared appetisers (two of each) are basically a scaled down taste teaser of the starters, in much the same way that the starters are to the main course? The potato chaat in a crispy semolina shell was my favourite, the tangy spud and crunchy coating a perfect combo. Be warned, the?Fisherman?s-style crisp shrimp had a fiery kick (note to readers, I?m a complete baby when it comes to spicy foods, Saff found the spice levels perfect).

We ordered one of each of the starters and shared them. I?d like to say we shared them equally, but that would be a lie? Saff preferred the?Bengali-spiced, yet sweet, vegetable balls leaving me to sweat my way through the hot chilli and tomato sauce that came with the?Crab and cod balls. The?rock samphire ?nests? were a nice touch too,?samphire is such an under-used vegetable.

Now on to the big balls? The lamb kofta was shaped into an ball (what else!) and was partnered by a?Bangla Scotch Egg. The vegetarian kofta, with morels and prunes, had the sublime balance of spice, flavour and heat as always achieved by the Cinnamon group.?The sides of a chicken and a vegetable biryani, as fragrant and delicious as they were, was maybe just a portion too much? We were getting full but still managed to eat clever little filo pastry ?hats? that sit atop the biryani sealing in the flavours and keeping the dishes warm.

On to dessert, by far the prettiest dish on the menu. Another ?nest?, this time made from sweetened?cooked vermicelli looked fab. The?pistachio kulfi, by far my favourite of any style and flavour of any ice-cream was given a splash of colour by the spiced mango pur?e.

Just as we were finishing our meal Vivek wandered over to ask what we thought of his new creations? And then showed us a picture on his phone of a man and his big balls! No it?s not what you think, it was a pic of a street performer he took in Trafalgar Square.

Before we sign off here?s a few more puns? These dishes are available?eggs-clusivley at?Cinnamon Soho just in time to celebrate the Easter weekend.?For ?30 per person, diners can get?egg-cited about this egg-cellent?three-course menu. Sorry, I couldn?t resist!

The Easter menu runs from Friday, 29th March to Monday, 1st April.

Growing Consensus: The Higg's Boson Exists

It's a long, slow road from tentative discovery, to various forms of peer review, to wide acceptance, never mind theory and experimental design, but recent years' work to pin down the Higgs Boson seem to be bearing fruit in the form of cautious announcements. FBeans writes with excerpts from both the New York Times ("Physicists announced Thursday they believe they have discovered the subatomic particle predicted nearly a half-century ago, which will go a long way toward explaining what gives electrons and all matter in the universe size and shape.") and from The Independent ("Cern says that confirming what type of boson the particle is could take years and that the scientists would need to return to the Large Hadron Collider ? the world's largest 'atom smasher' ? to carry out further tests. This will measure at what rate the particle decays and compare it with the results of predictions, as theorised by Edinburgh professor Peter Higgs 50 years ago.")

Boy Scouts survey volunteers, workers on gay ban

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? The Boy Scouts of America is surveying its volunteers and employees across the U.S. on the question of allowing gays in Scouting.

The Scouts have publicly pledged to ban gays from the organization. But behind the scenes, the Scouts privately convened a committee to determine whether the ban should be modified or lifted.

The ban was reaffirmed last year. But that could change in May, when a resolution will be put forward to the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America to decide whether to keep, modify or rescind the gay ban.

A survey emailed to 1.1 million adult Scouts poses five theoretical situations that could arise if the ban were lifted. Among them are a troop voting in a lesbian den leader, or a gay youth minister serving as Scoutmaster.

Respondents are asked to rate their feelings from strong support to strong opposition.

Sheryl Sandberg: On a mission to elevate women

Sheryl Sandberg is not backing down.

The Facebook chief operating officer's book "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead" goes on sale Monday amid criticism that she's too successful and rich to lead a movement. But Sandberg says her focus remains on spurring action and progress among women.

"The conversation, the debate is all good, because where we were before was stagnation ? and stagnation is bad," she said in an interview with The Associated Press. "And sometimes it takes real heated debate to wake people up and find a solution."

With "Lean In," Sandberg aims to arm women with the tools and guidance they need to keep moving forward in the workforce. The book's release is coupled with the launch of Sandberg's LeanIn.org a nonprofit that will receive all of the book's proceeds.

The book isn't just for women. It calls on men to lend support, both at home and in the office.

"This is about who we are as people," Sandberg says. "Who we can be as individuals and as a society."

In the book, Sandberg illuminates facts about the dearth of women in positions of power and offers real-world solutions. Women, Sandberg writes, make up only 14 percent of executive officers, 18 percent of elected congressional officials and 22 of 197 heads of state. What's worse, Sandberg says, is that women have not made true progress in corporate America over the past decade. Boardrooms are still as overwhelmingly male as they were 10 years ago.

"While women continue to outpace men in educational achievement, we have ceased making real progress at the top of any industry," she writes in "Lean In." ''This means that when it comes to making the decisions that most affect our world, the voices of women are not heard equally."

Sandberg, 43, has worked at Facebook as its No. 2 executive since 2008. CEO Mark Zuckerberg lured her away from Google to help run what has since become a social networking powerhouse and formidable Google rival. Sandberg says it's only been in the last few years that she's started thinking seriously about the issues affecting working women. As recently as three years ago, Sandberg says, she would not have spoken the words "women in the workforce."

"You never say the word 'woman' as a working woman because if you do, the person on the other side of the table is going to say you are asking for special treatment," she says.

But seeing women stall in their quest for corporate success bothered her more and more. In 2010, she was asked to speak at the newly minted TEDWomen, an arm of the annual TED conference which showcases "ideas worth spreading."

Her speech was titled "Why we have too few women leaders." The video became wildly popular. It has been viewed more than 2 million times on TED's website. Yet before she gave speech, Sandberg says "a whole bunch of people told me not to." And although she'd given hundreds of talks on Facebook and social media and exactly one on women, after her speech people would ask her "is this your thing now?'"

"That was really the first time I spoke up," she says. Since then, Sandberg has come to call herself "a proud feminist."

Sandberg says it was the flood of responses that she received following the speech that got her thinking about writing a book. Some women wrote to her and said the speech encouraged them to ask for a raise. Others said it motivated them to ask for more family-friendly work hours.

LeanIn.org grew out of the book with the help of co-founder Gina Bianchini, who was inspired by a course she took at Stanford University's Clayman Institute for Gender Research called "Voice & Influence." Its mission ? "to empower women and men to be as effective as possible and to create organizations where all people can thrive" ? is at the core of LeanIn.org. LEanIn.org hopes to reach as many people as possible by offering materials and easy-to-replicate guidelines online, for free. Sandberg calls it a platform, which, in the technology world means something that others can take, change and make their own.

"We are a startup," Sandberg says. "We are going to see what happens, and what companies do with our platform."

Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg talks about her first salary negotiation ...

Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg talks about her first salary negotiation at Facebook, and her first job review by Mark Zuckerberg

After mostly avoiding interviews for several weeks before the high-profile launch of her controversial book, ?Lean In,? Sheryl Sandberg broke her silence Sunday night with a pre-taped chat on the CBS program ?60 Minutes.? And while the interview was mostly friendly, Sandberg recounted some revealing anecdotes that she?s also shared in her book and recent speeches on the subject of women and their careers.

Arguing that the women?s revolution has ?stalled? ? she cites statistics that show women?s gains in top corporate jobs have slowed ? the Facebook chief operating officer contends that women must push themselves forward to advance their own interests, in spite of social conditioning to do the opposite.

To illustrate her point that women are often reluctant to negotiate for higher salaries, for example, Sandberg and her husband described their different reactions when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recruited Sandberg from a senior post at Google to run the business operations at Facebook. Sandberg says she was ready to take Zuckerberg?s first offer, but her husband, Dave Goldberg, and her brother-in-law convinced her to ask for a better financial package. (Ultimately, that package included enough shares in Facebook stock to make her a billionaire, at least on paper, before the company?s share price declined.)

?Not because the money mattered so much, but it was the principle,? said Goldberg, a former Yahoo executive who?s now CEO of the startup SurveyMonkey. ?I wanted Mark to really feel he stretched to get Sheryl because she was worth it.?

Sandberg also talks about her first six-month performance review from Zuckerberg. By her account, Zuckerberg told her, ?You?re biggest problem is you worry way too much about everyone liking you all the time.? According to Sandberg, her then-24-year-old boss told her that she would never make an impact unless she said something that at least someone disagreed with. ?It?s going to hold you back,? she says he warned her.

Those are just two of several instances in which Sandberg has acknowledged her own insecurities. At the same time, she says she was called ?bossy? as a child and says that?s partly why she wants to change the way society views women who assert themselves.

?This is deeply personal for me,? Sandberg told the CBS correspondent Norah O?Donnell. ?I want every little girl who someone says they?re bossy to be told instead, ?You have leadership skills.? ?

?Because you were told you were bossy?? asks O?Donnell.

?Because I was told that,? Sandberg says. ?And because every woman I know who was in a leadership position was told that.?

It may be noted that Sandberg only smiled modestly during the interview when O?Donnell remarked on her wealth and success and called her, at one point, ?one of the most powerful women in the world.?

And while saying it bothers her that there?s never been a woman president of the United States, Sandberg also brushed off O?Donnell?s question about whether she might run herself.

?I feel like I?m doing all the leaning in that I can do right now,? she said.

CBS has posted the interview and some additional video clips here, on?the??60 Minutes? website. Sandberg?s foundation, LeanIn.Org, has its own website. And here?s the Merc?s article on her book and the Lean In campaign.

Insurance agent convicted in Zumba prostitution case - U.S. News

Mark Strong leaves the Cumberland County Court House in Portland, Maine, on Jan. 18.

By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News

A Maine jury needed only a few hours Wednesday?morning to convict Mark Strong in the so-called Zumba prostitution case, in which he was charged with helping to run a sex business with his fitness-instructor mistress.

Strong, 57, an insurance agent, faced 12 counts of promotion of prostitution and one count of conspiracy in the trial in Alfred, Maine. No sentencing date was set, NBC station WLBZ of Bangor reported.

In closing arguments Tuesday, prosecutors argued that Strong was heavily involved in running the sex business with his mistress, Alexis Wright, out of her Zumba fitness studio in Kennebunk, Maine.

During the trial, prosecutors played video that they said established that Strong knew Wright was charging clients for sex and that he used hidden cameras and Skype to watch the encounters himself.

Defense lawyers argued that Strong was simply a foolish 57-year-old businessman so in love with the 30-year-old Zumba instructor that he made morally offensive but not illegal choices.

Strong has alleged that he was targeted because of his research into misconduct in the Kennebunk Police Department.

McIlroy says he won't quit again

(AP) ? Rory McIlroy offered another apology, a straightforward explanation and a pledge Wednesday that he will never again quit in middle of a round.

McIlroy faced the media for the first time since he abruptly walked off the golf course in the second round of the Honda Classic, telling reporters that his head was not in the right place and then issuing a statement that his sore wisdom tooth made it difficult to concentrate.

Turns out the wisdom tooth wasn't the whole truth, and the world's No. 1 player said, "It will never happen again."

"I think it was a buildup of everything," McIlroy said at the Cadillac Championship. "I've been putting a lot of pressure on myself to perform, and I've been working so hard and not really getting much out of it. That's just been the frustrating thing, and that's what happened.

"I just sort of let it all get to me."

McIlroy attributed his frustration to wanting to improve on his breakthrough season, when he won his second major at the PGA Championship, five tournaments around the world, money titles on the two biggest tours and established himself as the best player in golf.

But he dismissed suggestions that his new equipment deal added to the pressure.

The 23-year-old from Northern Ireland signed with Nike for what is said to be upward of $20 million a year. He was introduced as Nike's latest global star with a glitzy laser show in Abu Dhabi, but his game fell apart quickly. He has missed the cut, lost in the opening round of the Match Play Championship and quit after 26 holes of the Honda Classic. That led to speculation that he can't adjust to the new clubs.

"It doesn't make a difference what deal or what clubs I play. That's irrelevant," McIlroy said. "It's about me on the golf course, and the expectations and the pressure that I put myself under."

He also said his poor play has nothing to do with his relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

"Just because I have a bad day on the golf course and Caroline loses a match in Malaysia, it doesn't mean that we're breaking up," he said with a laugh. "It's sport. And look, I'd rather keep my private life as private as possible. Everything on that front is great, and I'm looking forward to seeing her next week when she goes to Miami."

It was the first time McIlroy has been criticized, not only for quitting in the middle of the round but trying to disguise the reason as a sore wisdom tooth. He did say his lower right tooth has been bothering him, and that he would see his dentist in Belfast later this year.

"It wasn't bothering me enough to quit," he said.

This was about the frustration of not finding his swing and being exposed on the golf course with high scores.

And it led to a decision he wishes he could take back.

"No matter how bad I was playing, I should have stayed out there," he said. "I should have tried to shoot the best score possible even though it probably wasn't going to be good enough to make the cut. At that point in time, I was just all over the place. I saw red ... and it was a mistake and everyone makes mistakes and I'm learning from them. I guess for me, some people have the pleasure of making mistakes in private. Most of my mistakes are in the public eye.

"I regret what I did."

The good news for McIlroy is that he is assured of playing all four rounds at Doral, where there is no cut. McIlroy is scheduled to play this week and at the Houston Open at the end of the month before going to the Masters. He did not indicate that he would add another tournament despite having played only 80 holes this year.

And while he walked off the golf course last week, McIlroy said he worked for 10 hours at The Bear's Club on Saturday, and almost as much on Sunday. He practiced Monday before going to Seminole for a club event. He said he realized his swing was not the same as it was last year, and the frustration comes from not being able to fix it.

"You just have to get to the root of the problem ? no pun intended," he said. "I know if I can get my takeaway fixed, the rest of the swing will follow. I've worked my (tail) off over the last four or five days to really try and get this right. Still, it's a work in progress. As I said, there's no quick fixes in golf but I'm going to go out there this week and all I care about is my swing. And I know if I can get my swing back on track that the results will follow."

McIlroy will play the opening two rounds of this World Golf Championship with Tiger Woods and Luke Donald, a group featuring the top three players in the world. They figure to command all the attention around the Blue Monster.

McIlroy isn't concerned his walkoff will cost him fans.

"Everyone makes mistakes," he said. "I'm 23 years old. I'm still learning."

Study shows declining life span for some US women

In this Saturday, March 2, 2013 photo, a woman smokes a cigarette at her home in Hayneville, Ala. A new study released on Monday, March 4, 2013 offers more compelling evidence that life expectancy for some U.S. women is actually falling. A new study found that over 10 years, death rates for women under age 75 increased in nearly half of U.S. counties - many of them rural and in the South and West. There was no such trend among men. Some leading theories blame higher smoking rates and higher unemployment, but several experts said they simply don't know. (AP Photo/Dave Martin)

(AP) ? A new study offers more compelling evidence that life expectancy for some U.S. women is actually falling, a disturbing trend that experts can't explain.

The latest research found that women age 75 and younger are dying at higher rates than previous years in nearly half of the nation's counties ? many of them rural and in the South and West. Curiously, for men, life expectancy has held steady or improved in nearly all counties.

The study is the latest to spot this pattern, especially among disadvantaged white women. Some leading theories blame higher smoking rates, obesity and less education, but several experts said they simply don't know why.

Women have long outlived men, and the latest numbers show the average life span for a baby girl born today is 81, and for a baby boy, it's 76. But the gap has been narrowing and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shown women's longevity is not growing at the same pace as men's.

The phenomenon of some women losing ground appears to have begun in the late 1980s, though studies have begun to spotlight it only in the last few years.

Trying to figure out why is "the hot topic right now, trying to understand what's going on," said Jennifer Karas Montez, a Harvard School of Public Health sociologist who has been focused on the life expectancy decline but had no role in the new study.

Researchers also don't know exactly how many women are affected. Montez says a good estimate is roughly 12 percent.

The study, released Monday by the journal Health Affairs, found declining life expectancy for women in about 43 percent of the nation's counties.

The researchers, David Kindig and Erika Cheng of the University of Wisconsin, looked at federal death data and other information for nearly all 3,141 U.S. counties over 10 years. They calculated mortality rates for women age 75 and younger, sometimes called "premature death rates," because many of those deaths are considered preventable.

Many counties have such small populations that even slight changes in the number of deaths produce dramatic swings in the death rate from year to year. To try to stabilize the numbers, the researchers computed some five-year averages. They also used statistical tricks to account for factors like income and education.

They found that nationwide, the rate of women dying younger than would be expected fell from 324 to 318 per 100,000. But in 1,344 counties, the average premature death rate rose, from 317 to about 333 per 100,000. Deaths rates rose for men in only about 100 counties.

"We were surprised" by how much worse women did in those counties, and by the geographic variations, Kindig said.

The study wasn't the first to reach those conclusions. Two years ago, a study led by the University of Washington's Dr. Christopher Murray also looked at county-level death rates. It too found that women were dying sooner, especially in the South.

Some other studies that focused on national data have highlighted steep declines in life expectancy for white women who never earned a high school diploma. Meanwhile, life expectancy seems to be growing for more educated and affluent women. Some experts also have suggested smokers or obese women are dragging down life expectancy.

The Murray and Kindig studies both spotlight regional differences. Some of the highest smoking rates are in Southern states, and the proportion of women who failed to finish high school is also highest in the South.

"I think the most likely explanation for why mortality is getting worse is those factors are just stronger in those counties," Murray said, adding that abuse of Oxycontin and other drugs also may add to the problem.

Some also think the statistics could reflect a migration of healthier women out of rural areas, leaving behind others who are too poor and unhealthy to relocate. That would change the rate, and make life expectancy in a county look worse, explained Bob Anderson of the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics

"We shouldn't jump to the conclusion that more people are getting sicker in these geographic areas than previously," he said.

But that is open to debate. Migration didn't seem to affect male death rates. Murray disagrees with the theory, saying he has tracked a great deal of movement from urban areas to less-populated counties.

Oil drops on US supplies; pump price down to $3.73

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil fell below $90 a barrel Wednesday after the U.S. government said that crude supplies are now 10 percent higher than a year ago.

At midday, benchmark oil for April delivery was down 79 cents to $90.03 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It fell as low $89.55 after the government reported a big increase in the nation's stockpile of oil.

U.S. oil supplies grew last week by 3.8 million barrels, or 0.4 percent, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report. Analysts expected an increase of 1.1 million barrels. At 381.4 million barrels, the nation's supply of crude is 10.3 percent above year-ago levels.

Falling oil prices have spelled some relief for U.S. drivers. The average price of a gallon of gas fell for a seventh straight day, to $3.73 a gallon. That's still up 21 cents from a month ago, but down 3 cents from this time last year.

The death of Venezuela President Hugo Chavez had little immediate effect on the price of oil. The full impact of his death may not be felt until Venezuela, which sits on the world's second-largest oil reserves, picks a new leader ? one who might choose a course different from Chavez. Elections are expected to be called within a month.

Chavez, who died Tuesday after a two-year battle with cancer, oversaw a decline in oil production during his 14 years as the leader of Venezuela. In the short-term, traders will watch for any disruption to Venezuela's production. Longer term, they'll want to see if the new government invites foreign investment in Venezuela's oil industry and is able to boost output.

Brent crude, used to price many kinds of oil imported by U.S. refineries, fell 76 cents to $110.85 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline dropped 2 cents to $3.13 a gallon.

? Heating oil slipped 1 cent to $2.97 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 4 cents to $3.49 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Carrier-certified GPS Devices: Worth the Extra Cost? | Rocky ...

With so many types of cellular and mobile devices capable of GPS tracking?and the network service that accompanies each one?it?s sometimes hard to decide which one really is the best for you (or the best in general), especially if you may or may not have done your research. What?s the difference between these companies, and why are some devices (say, off the web) cheaper than the ?name-brand? or in-store ones?

?

Carrier-certified vs. Non-carrier-certified GPS Equipment

There is a distinction. Carrier-certified GPS devices, for instance cellular, mobile, and GPS tracking equipment, undergo an enormous and difficult examination period before they are approved for release onto wireless networks, and many of those not one but three stages of testing. Every carrier-certified GPS enabled device must meet the standards of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a United States federal subdivision founded in 1934 that makes in-US and international contact by satellite, radio, and wire, among others, conform to certain criteria that will ensure the most efficient use and provide the highest national security of America?s communications structure.

?

Exclusively cellular and mobile equipment go through even more testing under the worldwide PCS Type Certification Review Board (PTCRB), not connected with any one specific wireless company, government or country. Its function is to provide a way of standardizing the assessment and verification of each proposed GPS enabled device; the equipment will only be certified if it meets the PTCRB?s requirements of being sufficiently compatible with the UMTS and/or GSM wireless networks. The last stage of testing is within each carrier itself to make sure each device is compatible within its own wireless network and measures up to the carrier?s basic performance criteria, which differs among companies.

?

Why all the fuss? Each carrier company markets its benefits and reliability of wireless network (fastest data transfer, least amount of dropped calls, ability to get service or signal strength anywhere) to the public. To uphold their promise of customer satisfaction, carriers are dedicated to rigorously testing the devices that will access their wireless network so that as few breakdowns and network failures as possible occur.

?

Does Purchasing One Device Over the Other Make a Difference?

It does if you?re spending quite a bit of money to ensure that your device will be properly compatible with the carrier network you choose. Non-carrier-certified GPS devices may be just as reliable and fully compatible as the verified ones, but you won?t have the guarantee.

First documented case of child cured of HIV

Mar. 3, 2013 ? Dr. Deborah Persaud of Johns Hopkins University today described the first documented case of a child being cured of HIV. The landmark findings were announced at the 2013 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta, GA.

Dr. Persaud, an amfAR grantee, detailed the case of a two-year-old child in Mississippi diagnosed with HIV at birth and immediately put on antiretroviral therapy. At 18 months, the child ceased taking antiretrovirals and was lost to follow-up. When brought back into care at 23 months, despite being off treatment for five months, the child was found to have an undetectable viral load. A battery of subsequent highly sensitive tests confirmed the absence of HIV.

Confirmation of the cure was made possible by a grant the Foundation awarded to Dr. Persaud and Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga of the University of Massachusetts in September 2012. The grant allowed Drs. Persaud and Luzuriaga to establish a research collaboratory to explore and document possible pediatric HIV cure cases. The collaboratory includes renowned researchers Drs. Stephen Spector and Doug Richman at the University of California, San Diego; Dr. Frank Maldarelli at the National Cancer Institute; and Dr. Tae-Wook Chun at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

"The child's pediatrician in Mississippi was aware of the work we were doing, and quickly notified our team as soon as this young patient's case came to her attention," said Dr. Rowena Johnston, amfAR vice president and director of research. "Because the collaboratory was already in place, the researchers were able to mobilize immediately and perform the tests necessary to determine if this was in fact a case of a child being cured."

According to Dr. Persaud, comprehensive tests have confirmed beyond doubt that both mother and child were HIV positive when the child was born, and today no signs of HIV infection in the child can be detected by the most sensitive means available.

The only other documented case of an HIV cure to date remains that of Timothy Brown, the so-called "Berlin patient." In 2006, while on treatment for HIV, Mr. Brown was diagnosed with leukemia. His physician was able to treat his leukemia with a stem-cell transplant from a person who was born with a genetic mutation causing immunity to HIV infection. Following the transplant, Mr. Brown was able to stop HIV treatment without experiencing a return of his HIV disease.

This new case points to the tantalizing possibility that different populations of HIV-positive people might be cured in different ways. While Mr. Brown's case was the outcome of a complex, high-risk, and expensive series of procedures, this new case appears to have been the direct result of a comparatively inexpensive course of antiretroviral therapy.

"Given that this cure appears to have been achieved by antiretroviral therapy alone," said Dr. Johnston, "it is also imperative that we learn more about a newborn's immune system, how it differs from an adult's, and what factors made it possible for the child to be cured."

The Mississippi case also underscores the importance of identifying HIV-positive pregnant women, expanding access to treatment regimens than can prevent mother-to-child transmission, and of immediately putting infants on antiretroviral therapy in the event that they are born HIV positive.

"We are proud to have played a leading role in bringing this first pediatric HIV cure to light," said amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost. "The case is a startling reminder that a cure for HIV could come in ways we never anticipated, and we hope this is the first of many children cured of HIV in the months and years to come."

A Middle Eastern consortium is poised to bid 1.5 billion pounds ($2.3 billion) for full ownership of Britain?s Arsenal Football Club in the biggest-ever takeover of a soccer team, The Telegraph newspaper reported.

The bid is likely to be mounted in the next few weeks, seeking to buy out the current majority owner, U.S. sports investor Stan Kroenke, the British newspaper said.

The Middle Eastern investors do not want to reveal their identities yet but will be backed by funds from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, the newspaper reported late on Saturday without naming its sources.

The consortium would make available transfer funds ?to transform the club into a major force in European and world football?, the newspaper quoted an unnamed source familiar with the plan as saying.

?The bid team regard Arsenal as one of the great clubs of European football but also one that is no longer punching its weight and is in danger of falling behind,? it said.

The newspaper added that the consortium would pledge to reduce ticket prices at Arsenal?s Emirates Stadium in London, and would aim to recreate there some of the atmosphere of Highbury, Arsenal?s historic former stadium.

The takeover would raise questions over the future of Arsenal?s manager, Arsene Wenger, although the consortium values his football knowledge and want him to remain at the club, The Telegraph said.

An acquisition would add to a string of investments in European soccer teams by Middle Eastern interests over the last several years.

Manchester City, the current English Premier League champions, were bought by a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family in 2008, while Kuwait?s al-Hasawi family bought twice European Cup winners Nottingham Forest in July last year. France?s Paris St Germain and Spain?s Malaga are owned by Qatari investors.
