When getting into becoming a weight trainer there are a few accessories to consider purchasing; this may benefit you in the long run! They are worth every penny, and can be found for rather cheap prices under most circumstances. The reason you would want the following equipment is mainly for safety and injury prevention, which you are going to want when getting into training with weights regardless if it is basic lifting or power lifting.
Gloves
The utilization of gloves can prevent serious injuries from occurring, and this is mainly through you being able to grip the weight being used. Contrary to popular belief, the use of weight training gloves is not for preventing calluses or blisters, although it does help a bit, but not much. Many think it is true because they do not do exercises that would create them, and think that is why they have them on. They are not for style, but for grip! When choosing gloves make sure that they provide the grip you need, and are not too big or small. Big gloves will actually create blisters by being pushed up and taking the skin with it. Small gloves will cut off blood circulation and may cause you to faint even.
Weight Belt
Weight belts are perfect for keeping your form and posture perfect, which in turn means that you will not hurt your lower back. These are needed mainly for squats, lunges, deadlifts, and good mornings. Some also weight belts for keeping their body straight during biceps curls and military presses, though you do not necessarily need it for them. The way each of the mentioned exercises work is by you having to bend at the waist with a straight, not rounded, back. The belt keeps your back straight and alleviates the use of your lower back for exercises.
Wrist Wraps
Wrist wraps and straps are different. Wrist wraps only go around your wrists and do not contain a strap that you wrap around the barbell or dumbbell. They are used to keep your wrists straight and prevent them from bending to far, which can lead to serious injuries. You want to wrap them nice and snug, but not so tight as to where your cut off blood circulation. Wrist wraps are perfect for exercises that involve pressing mainly such as military press and chest press. They can even be good for keeping your wrist straight during squats to prevent them from rolling back.
Wrist Straps
Wrist straps are the best gear for those who are planning on holding heavy amounts of weight. The way they work is by being wrapped around your wrist with a strap hanging off, which is the part you place around the barbell or dumbbell. They can be tricky to get the hang of at first, but just make sure when fixing the straps to make the dangling portion hang off to the outside of your wrist. Again do not wrap them so tightly on the weight that blood flow is prevented! They are best used for curling exercises and those that require a lifting or pulling motion such as biceps curls, deadlifts, shoulder shrugs, and are also good for the pressing movements as well. The reason why is because they ensure a firm grip on the bar, and if you were to choose then wrist straps would be the best investment out of the two.
Braces for the Joints
Braces are needed by those who have injuries or permanent pains on their joints. How they work is by placing pressure against the joint, therefore alleviating much of the pain that is occurring through the pressure of the weights being lifted. The most common braces you will see being used are for the knee because that area is being worn down on a daily basis. Other braces are elbow, thigh, shoulder, wrist, and ankle as well. The best preventive measure is to use knee braces while performing heavy amounts during the squat exercise.
All of these accessories are great to have at your disposal, and under most circumstances those who stick with fitness training always get at least two of the listed items. The use of wrist straps can even increase the amount of weight being lifted by 25% due to the fact that you have a good grip. This is not cheating, but instead happening because you have proper form!
The Giants initially announced that defensive tackle Shaun Rogers would miss the season because of a blood clot in his left calf.
But coach Tom Coughlin told reporters Tuesday ?there?s a ray of hope.?
?We?re just going to hang in there as long as we can,? Coughlin said, via Jorge Castillo of the Newark Star-Ledger. ?There is a chance that he could come back and play. It?s what we?ve been told so we?re just going to hang in there as long as we can and see if we can, see if they can determine where he is and how fast he would be able to play and all of that stuff.?
The Giants were disappointed at the initial diagnosis for reasons that transcend the rash of injuries. Coughlin called it ?sad,? and noted how Rogers had lost 50 pounds over the offseason to get himself in shape.
They never put him on injured reserve, cutting others instead to make roster space. Rogers rode a stationary bike during practice Tuesday, wearing shorts and a practice jersey.
Initially, they thought the bood thinning medicaiton would prevent his return. But a second opinion gave them hope he could play again this year.
?He is on a different kind of medication and that medication is supposedly something that can be dealt with after a certain amount of time,? Coughlin said. ?Whether it?s 5, 6 weeks, whatever, I?m not sure.?
While the Giants will be glad to see him return to the lineup, a return to health after a serious condition is more important.
The field of prosthetics is perhaps the best example of humanity and technology coming together. For proof, consider this video of 4-year-old Emma, born with a muscular condition that prohibited her from moving her arms freely ? until modern technology built a pair of "magic arms" customized just for her.
Emma's condition,?called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, affects her joints and muscles, making her arms extremely weak. There are devices that can aid in limb movement for people affected by this and similar conditions, but historically they have not been designed for young children. One such device is the Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton, or WREX, a set of powered joints that assists in natural movement.
For Emma, the machine was very empowering, but its bulk and weight (it is normally attached to a wheelchair) meant her ability to use it in everyday life was very limited. So Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, which treated her, looked into creating a custom version. They used a Stratasys 3-D printer to create a special harness and fittings out of strong ABS plastic (the same used in LEGO bricks).
Whitney Sample, a research design engineer at Nemours, describes the advantage of the printed parts in the video, recently published by Stratasys:
This is one of those industries that matches perfectly with 3-D printing, additive manufacturing, because we need custom everything. We can answer a need in a heartbeat.?I don't have to worry about lead time to machine something, order supplies. I can just basically go back to my program and print out another one.
Emma herself outgrew her first one and they simply printed out another better suited to her new size.?The process has proven effective and popular: Since it was first tried with Emma, more than a dozen kids with similar conditions have been given custom WREX builds.
3-D printing is also useful in other areas of prosthetic treatment; in fact, it could be said that it is revolutionizing the field, and is in the process of being applied to the replication of many other body parts.?Artificial limbs can be made and adjusted with more speed and precision than ever before, turning the once?one-size-fits-all prosthesis into a more?patient-centered treatment.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Eastman Kodak Co. said Friday its second-quarter loss widened as revenue fell while it reorganized under bankruptcy protection.
The Rochester, N.Y.-based company filed for bankruptcy protection in January. It hopes to emerge from bankruptcy protection a leaner and more profitable company in 2013.
Its loss for the April to June quarter totaled $299 million, up from $179 million last year. Excluding costs related to restructuring and reorganization under bankruptcy protection, its loss narrowed to $139 million, from $179 million last year.
Revenue fell 27 percent to $1.08 billion, due to the company's exit from the digital camera business, lower sales of traditional camera products and the stronger dollar.
Kodak, founded in 1880, filed for bankruptcy protection after being hurt first by Japanese competition and then by its inability to keep pace with the shift from film to digital photo technology over the past decade.
The company subsequently announced plans to stop making digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames, saying that it sees home photo printers, high-speed commercial inkjet presses, workflow software and packaging as the core of its future business.
Since 2005, Kodak has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into new lines of inkjet printers. Once the digital camera business is phased out, Kodak said its consumer business will focus on printing and it will seek a company to license its digital camera brand.
Plus, a few movies you may have missed in the theaters.
We've got another sparse week on home video, but it's at least bolstered by one outstanding documentary of a cultural icon. Beyond that, we've got a whopping three book adaptations and a historical epic actioner, so see below for the full list!
ScienceDaily (Aug. 7, 2012) ? Conflict-of-interest statements made by physicians and scientists in their medical journal articles after they had been allegedly paid by pharmaceutical manufacturers as part of off-label marketing programs are often inadequate, highlighting the deficiencies in relying on author candidness and the weaknesses in some journal practices in ensuring proper disclosure, according to a study by international researchers published in this week's PLoS Medicine. Off-label marketing is the promotion by a manufacturer of a drug for use in a condition or age group, or in a dose or form of administration that has not been specifically approved by a drugs regulatory body; it is illegal in the United States.
In an analysis led by Aaron Kesselheim from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, the authors from the US and Australia found that overall, only one in seven authors reported by whistleblowers to be involved in off-label marketing activities fully disclosed their conflict of interest in published articles.
The authors reached these conclusions by examining 26 whistleblower complaints of illegal off-label promotion and identified the 91 doctors and scientists recorded as being involved in this practice. The researchers found 39 (43%) of these 91 experts had authored 404 publications related to the drugs at issue in the complaints. However, only 62 (15%) of these articles had adequate disclosures. Among the articles without adequate disclosures, 43% (148) had no disclosure at all, 4% had statements denying any conflicts of interest, 40% had disclosures that did not mention the drug manufacturer, and 13% had disclosures that mentioned the manufacturer but inadequately conveyed the nature of the relationship between author and drug manufacturer reported in the complaint.
The authors argue that such failures in relation to off-label marketing schemes are especially troubling because off-label use is an area of clinical practice in which opinion is likely to be divided about appropriate care and there is no guidance from regulatory authorities. Therefore, high-profile ''opinion leaders'' may exert considerable influence on prescribing practices through their publications. The authors argue: "More adequate disclosure of financial ties in these situations would give readers an opportunity to weigh the potential for bias."
The authors conclude: "Our findings suggest that approaches to controlling the effects of conflicts of interest that rely on author candidness and variable policing by journals have fallen short of the mark. Readers are left with little choice but to be skeptical."

Seafood, wild or farmed? The answer may be bothPublic release date: 6-Aug-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) Most people think of seafood as either wild or farmed, but in fact both categories may apply to the fish you pick up from your grocery store. In recent years, for example, as much as 40 percent of the Alaskan salmon catch originated in fish hatcheries, although it may be labeled "all wild, never farmed."
An article produced by a working group of UC Santa Barbara's National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) recommends that when a combination of seafood production techniques are used, this be acknowledged in the marketplace. The group calls on national and international organizations and governmental agencies to use the term "hybrid," when applicable. The article is in press with Marine Policy, and is currently available online.
"Farming fish and shellfish is generally a different way to produce seafood than fishing," said Dane Klinger, first author and a Ph.D. student at Stanford University. "While fisheries traditionally interact with their target population only at the time of capture, aquaculture, in its 'purest' state, controls the entire lifecycle of the organism, from egg to harvest. However, many common types of seafood are produced using techniques from both fisheries and aquaculture."
Mary Turnipseed, second author and a former postdoctoral fellow at NCEAS, commented: "Seafood production is a critical part of global food security, but the way we study and talk about it often obscures how to achieve the thing we care the most about: increasing the supply of sustainably produced seafood to feed a rapidly growing human population. We need to start collecting more accurate data on how seafood is really produced in today's world, and a first step will be through replacing the old farmed-fished dichotomy with a farmed-fished-hybrid classification scheme."
The article reveals how the strictly traditional categories of seafood production fisheries and aquaculture are insufficient to account for the growth potential and environmental impacts of the seafood sector. The authors examine several popular seafood products that are harvested using a combination of techniques generally ascribed to either fisheries or aquaculture.
The authors reviewed several cases of fisheries that are augmented by aquaculture. In addition to the example of hatcheries stocking Pacific salmon in Alaskan fisheries, hatcheries also stock scallops in New Zealand waters, and eastern oysters in the Chesapeake Bay, according to the authors. And American lobsters are fed by bait placed in traps until they reach legal catch size. In fact, the amount of bait provided to lobsters in one season is often greater than the volume of lobster catch in the same season, by a factor of two.
In aquaculture, the lines are often blurred fishing may be involved in production. For example, Bluefin tuna farms obtain their stock by fishing. These farms also fish for feed, and use 10 to 20 kilograms of fish for every kilogram of tuna they produce.
The primary source of information about the world's fisheries and aquaculture enterprises is the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). However, the authors explain that the reporting of data from many developing and developed countries to the FAO is incomplete. They note that for the 52 percent of countries that do submit adequate data, "adding a hybrid production category would help elucidate their national understanding of domestic seafood production, as well as enhance global understanding of an important food sector."
The authors conclude by stating the urgency of adding the hybrid category: "Without these data, transformations in the market for a critical food and livelihood source for billions of people could occur, with global analysts and policymakers being the last to know."
The team responsible for the article, the NCEAS Working Group on Envisioning a Sustainable Global Seafood Market and Restored Marine Ecosystems, includes ecologists, economists, policy analysts, members of the seafood industry, and marine conservation organizations.

Nina Geneson Otis from Metropolitan Properties reached out to us today to break the news that Peter Acworth (owner of Kink.com and the historic Armory) has decided to lease out the third floor of the building, starting at $2 per square foot per month with over 20,000 square feet available. The website states that one of the many property highlight is its "size, size, size!" There's a shared meal program available as well. Also on the website is the 3rd floor's floorplan, which shows us that there are many, many suites available for lease if your company's not quite ready for 20,000 square feet of Kink.com's real estate. Ideally the space would be rented out to one tenant, but multiple tenants would be considered with a lease agreement of at least 5,000 square feet. ? Historic SF Armory Leasing Information [Nina Geneson Otis]
As the U.S. economy limps along into its fourth year of a tepid recovery, its job creation machine remains badly broken.
Friday?s monthly employment report was better than many forecasters were expecting, showing a relatively strong gain of 163,000 new jobs in July. But the rise of the jobless rate -? up a tenth of a point to 8.3 percent -- was a painful reminder of how many sidelined workers have been left behind by the weakest rebound in six decades.
As the subpar recovery drags on and growth appears to be, ?in the words of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, ?stuck in the mud,? the weak pace of hiring may be doing lasting damage.
?You destroy human capital, and the problem is it's difficult for those individuals to come back,? said Ed Lazear, a Stanford economist who served as adviser to President George W. Bush. ?People who are in their mid- to later 50s -- who would otherwise be working for another 10 years or so -- now may simply decide to stay out of the labor market. That's a lot of lost manpower and lost productivity.?
Though the headline jobless rate that attracts the most attention in the media has been trending lower from a peak of 10 percent in 2009, that doesn't capture the large group of Americans who have given up looking for work.
The government isn?t hiding the data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has been tracking unemployment as a percent of the population, for example, since 1948. By that broadest measure, some 41 percent of the total population over 16 is not working -- a rate that has barely budged since the recession ended in June 2009.
Temporary jobs are up nearly 45 percent since the recession ended in 2009 ? experts say that's because businesses aren't confident about the recovery and want to stay flexible. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.
Another measure, the labor participation rate, shows that the share of working-age Americans who are either working or looking for a job has fallen to levels not seen since the early 1980s, when fewer women chose to do paid work. The share of men in the labor force is down to about 70 percent, the lowest level in the more than six decades that the Labor Department been tracking the data.
Though economists and politicians don?t agree on why the economy?s hiring machinery is sputtering, there?s widespread consensus that millions of jobs go unfilled in the U.S. because employers can?t find skilled workers. There?s less agreement, though, on where the money will come from to train those jobless workers. Nobody, it seems, wants to pick up the tab.
But the importance of education and training are clear: Workers with college and professional degrees earn substantially more than those with only high school diplomas. That's lost income that would otherwise add to the gross domestic product. As college tuition costs continue to outstrip inflation and wage growth, those credentials remain out of reach for many potential students.
There?s also a mismatch between the skills being taught in schools and those actually needed in the workplace ? even at colleges and universities. Among the class of 2011, for example, engineering dominated the list of top-paid majors, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. But of 1.6 million bachelor's degrees awarded in 2009, fewer than 90,000 were in engineering.
Though younger workers are having a harder time getting careers started, older workers are at greater risk of leaving the workforce ? whether by choice or not. Among unemployed workers 45 and older, nearly 11 percent had been out of work for 99 weeks or more, according to a 2010 study. By contrast only 6 percent of the unemployed under 35 had been out of work that long, according to?Congressional Research Service?study.
Though the study found little difference in long-term unemployment based on the level of education or gender, married workers were more likely to have been jobless for 99 weeks or more, as were black workers.
The cost of so many people out of work for so long is impossible to calculate. But a full accounting starts with the human costs to those unable to find a job. ?
?A large literature in economics and sociology has shown that unemployment correlates strongly with the incidence of depression, low self-esteem, unhappiness, and even suicide,? according to a paper by economists Till von Wachter and Dan Sullivan.
By matching job loss data with Social Security death records, the two researchers estimated that the mortality rate for ?high-seniority? male workers in the year after a job loss is 50 to 100 percent higher than for their employed peers. Even 20 years after a job loss, the mortality rate was 10 to 15 percent higher.
The joblessness also has a wide impact on the economy, with fewer workers contributing to the growth of overall economic output and consumer spending, which accounts for roughly 70 percent of GDP.
The result is something of a vicious circle: Fewer workers means less spending which holds back growth that would otherwise prompt employers to boost hiring.
To be sure, there may be other reasons consumers have pulled back. Older households, whether voluntarily retired or simply unemployed for life, spend more cautiously as they transition to life on a fixed income. That demographic shift, as baby boomers enter a lower-spending phase of life, will likely weigh on consumer demand for years to come. ?
Many households, meanwhile, are still trying to pay off large piles of debt after taking on too much during the borrowing binge of the 2000s. Others may be may be spooked by the prospect of looming federal tax increases and spending cuts set to hit at year end. Those would almost certainly spark another recession unless Congress finds a compromise.
?There are a lot of question marks that are going to be answered in November,? said Pierpont Securities chief economist Stephen Stanley. ??Until then a lot of people have just pulled in their horns.?
