When getting into becoming a weight trainer there are a few accessories to consider purchasing; this may benefit you in the long run! They are worth every penny, and can be found for rather cheap prices under most circumstances. The reason you would want the following equipment is mainly for safety and injury prevention, which you are going to want when getting into training with weights regardless if it is basic lifting or power lifting.
Gloves
The utilization of gloves can prevent serious injuries from occurring, and this is mainly through you being able to grip the weight being used. Contrary to popular belief, the use of weight training gloves is not for preventing calluses or blisters, although it does help a bit, but not much. Many think it is true because they do not do exercises that would create them, and think that is why they have them on. They are not for style, but for grip! When choosing gloves make sure that they provide the grip you need, and are not too big or small. Big gloves will actually create blisters by being pushed up and taking the skin with it. Small gloves will cut off blood circulation and may cause you to faint even.
Weight Belt
Weight belts are perfect for keeping your form and posture perfect, which in turn means that you will not hurt your lower back. These are needed mainly for squats, lunges, deadlifts, and good mornings. Some also weight belts for keeping their body straight during biceps curls and military presses, though you do not necessarily need it for them. The way each of the mentioned exercises work is by you having to bend at the waist with a straight, not rounded, back. The belt keeps your back straight and alleviates the use of your lower back for exercises.
Wrist Wraps
Wrist wraps and straps are different. Wrist wraps only go around your wrists and do not contain a strap that you wrap around the barbell or dumbbell. They are used to keep your wrists straight and prevent them from bending to far, which can lead to serious injuries. You want to wrap them nice and snug, but not so tight as to where your cut off blood circulation. Wrist wraps are perfect for exercises that involve pressing mainly such as military press and chest press. They can even be good for keeping your wrist straight during squats to prevent them from rolling back.
Wrist Straps
Wrist straps are the best gear for those who are planning on holding heavy amounts of weight. The way they work is by being wrapped around your wrist with a strap hanging off, which is the part you place around the barbell or dumbbell. They can be tricky to get the hang of at first, but just make sure when fixing the straps to make the dangling portion hang off to the outside of your wrist. Again do not wrap them so tightly on the weight that blood flow is prevented! They are best used for curling exercises and those that require a lifting or pulling motion such as biceps curls, deadlifts, shoulder shrugs, and are also good for the pressing movements as well. The reason why is because they ensure a firm grip on the bar, and if you were to choose then wrist straps would be the best investment out of the two.
Braces for the Joints
Braces are needed by those who have injuries or permanent pains on their joints. How they work is by placing pressure against the joint, therefore alleviating much of the pain that is occurring through the pressure of the weights being lifted. The most common braces you will see being used are for the knee because that area is being worn down on a daily basis. Other braces are elbow, thigh, shoulder, wrist, and ankle as well. The best preventive measure is to use knee braces while performing heavy amounts during the squat exercise.
All of these accessories are great to have at your disposal, and under most circumstances those who stick with fitness training always get at least two of the listed items. The use of wrist straps can even increase the amount of weight being lifted by 25% due to the fact that you have a good grip. This is not cheating, but instead happening because you have proper form!
